Mrs. Ella W. Fisher – a native of Mississippi, was a coach without peers as she guided the women’s basketball team at Savannah State from 1948 – 1956. Under her tutelage the team won 40 games and only had nine defeats. In 1953 – 1954, the Tigerette sextet won eleven games without a defeat and captured the mythical National Women’s Basketball Championship of Small Negro Colleges. Mrs. Fisher’s teams of 1952 – 1954 went twenty – five consecutive games without encountering a loss. Mrs. Fisher worked for many years as director of Savannah State College’s Division of Student Support and Special Programs.
