Box Score ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – The No. 1S Savannah State University (25-21) started the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship with a 13-0 win over No. 4N seed of Morgan State University (13-27) in five innings at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex Thursday.
Senior first baseman
Torrian Wright went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk, while freshman third baseman
Cortni Jones, junior pitcher
Amanda Hallman and junior catcher
Tia Bolden each went 2-for-3. Jones added a three-run home run and two runs scored and four RBIs, Hallman scored once with an RBI and Bolden scored once with two RBIs.
Junior right fielder
Alexis Singleton went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs. On the mound, Hallman pitched the first three shutout innings scattering two hits with six strikeouts and no walks, while freshman pitcher
Kasie Johnson pitched the final two innings giving up one hit with four strikeouts.
Hallman started the game strikeout out the side in the top of the first inning and recorded two strikeouts in the second inning for five strikeouts in six batters faced.
The Lady Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a strikeout to begin the inning, sophomore shortstop
Brianna Harris walked and advanced to second after Singleton's sacrifice bunt for the second out of the inning.
Wright was intentionally walked and Jones homered to left field for a three-run shot. The next batter popped up to the second baseman to end the inning.
The Lady Tigers scored seven more runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead 10-0 after two innings. Bolden started the inning with a double to center field, followed by senior second baseman
Antonette Smith's single up the middle to bring home Bolden for a 4-0 lead. Sophomore center fielder
Shelby Eccles walked and after a pitching change, junior left fielder
Chasney Jenkins sacrificed Smith and Eccles to third and second for the first out of the inning.
A lineout to the third base recorded the second out of the inning, but Singleton doubled to center field to bring home Smith and Eccles for a 6-0 lead and then Wright doubled down the left field line to drive home Singleton for a 7-0 lead. Jones hit an infield single to bring home Wright for an 8-0 lead and Hallman doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third with one out.
Bolden singled up the middle to drive home Jones and Hallman for a 10-0 lead, but a groundout to the second baseman ended the inning.
Morgan State recorded two hits in the third inning with two outs, but a fielder's choice to the second baseman ended the inning.
The Lady Tigers scored the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning to capture a 13-run win. Eccles started the inning with walk and stole second. Jenkins walked, but Eccles was caught stealing third and Jenkins advanced to second. Harris double to left field and advance to third on the throw as Jenkins scored for an 11-0 lead.
Singleton reached on an error by the second baseman to bring home Harris from third for a 12-0 lead to force a Lady Bear pitching change. Wright singled to left field and a fly out to right field recorded the second out of the inning. Hallman singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw and Singleton scored and Wright advanced to third on the throw. A strikeout looking ended the inning.
Morgan State started the top of the fourth inning with a single and back-to-back walks to load the bases loaded, but back-to-back strikeout looking and a strikeout swinging ended the Lady Bears chance to score a run.
The Lady Tigers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fourth and the Lady Bears went 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth inning to end the game.
Three Lady Bears recorded a hit with Damali Young, Audrianna Alvarez and Nicole Vandenberg, while Amy Begg (8-14) picked up the loss pitching one inning giving up six runs on three hits with three walks. Erica Hawkins gave up seven runs in 1.1 innings on six hits, while Victoria Propst pitched the final 1.2 shutout innings.
The Lady Tigers face the winner of No. 2N Norfolk State University and No. 3 Florida A&M University at 7 p.m. Thursday.
