COLUMBUS, Ga.- Ambria Guye went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs to lead Savannah State to a 9-4 win over LeMoyne-Owen on Monday evening in a elimination game in the SIAC Tournament at the South Commons Softball Complex.
In addition to advancing to the next round, Savannah State set a new single-season record with the victory.
The win gives SSU 27 wins on the season which broke the old record of 26 wins that was set in 2012 and matched in 2013 and 2016.
With the victory, SSU got some revenge on the Magicians who defeated the Lady Tigers 12-7 in the SIAC Roundup on March 12 in Gardendale, Alabama.
LeMoyne-Owen left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning but could not score.
With two outs in the bottom of the first,
Jayla Alexander hit a single and Guye followed with a home run over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead.
The Magicians answered with four runs in the top of the second to take the lead, but Savannah State matched LeMoyne-Owen in the both of the second with four runs to go back in front 6-4.
Ariana Battle and
Zorianna Ford hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. After Ford was replaced with
Morgan Cole as a pinch runner,
Milani Dunning hit a single up the middle that allowed Battle to score, a groundout by
Ansley Hudson brought home Cole and a single up the middle by
Kaitlyn Williams sent home Dunning. Following an out by
Jayla Alexander, Guye singled to third base. The Magicians pitcher threw out Guye is a pickoff move but that allowed Williams to steal third and home.
With no scoring being done in the third and fourth innings, Savanah State added three more scores in the bottom of the fifth.
Alexander hit a doubled and scored on a double by Guye. After a pitching change, Guye advanced to third on a wild pitch and
Neveah Ford drew a walk. Another wild pitch allowed Guye to score and Ford to advance to second and third base. A groundout to the shortstop by
Kennedy Alsbrook sent Ford home for the final run of the game.
Guye ended the game with a single, double and a home run while scoring twice. Alexander had two hits and scored twice while Battle added a single and a triple and stole two bases.
Aaliyah Martin earned the win on the mound. Martin pitched seven inning and struck out five batters while surrendering seven hits, four runs and three walks.
Savannah State (27-17, 15-9 SIAC) will play Miles on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
The Golden Bears are the #3 seed from the SIAC West.
During the regular season, the Lady Tigers, who are the #3 seed from the SIAC East, defeated Miles 5-3 on March 12 at the SIAC Roundup in Gardendale, Alabama.
