Lady Tigers Drop SIAC Tournament Opener To Spring Hill

COLUMBUS, Ga.- Savannah State's plan to pull a upset in the opening round of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament fell short as the Lady Tigers fell victim to Spring Hill, 8-0, in a game played at the South Commons Softball Complex.

SSU entered the tournament as the third seed from the SIAC East while the Badgers were the second seed from the SIAC West.

Ansley Hudson led off the game with a single to left field. That would turn out to be Savannah State's only hit of the afternoon.

While Hudson got the only hit in the game for SSU, she wasn't the only Lady Tiger to reach base.

Madison Starling-Martin was hit by a pitch in the second inning and in the top of the third, Ariana Battle was hit by a pitch and Hudson reached base because of an error by the short stop. Phaedra Smith drew a walk in the fifth and Battle reached base on a fielder's choice.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Spring Hill scored seven times. The Badgers added another run in the fifth, to close out the scoring.

Donnea Allen and Aaliyah Martin saw action on the mound for Savannah State.

Allen lasted 3.1 innings, giving up seven hits, seven runs and seven walks while recording a pair of strikeouts. In her lone inning on the mound, Martin surrendered one hit, one run and two walks.

With the loss, the Lady Tigers will be in the elimination bracket where they will take on LeMoyne-Owen, the #4 seed from the SIAC West on Monday at 6:30 p.m..

The Magicians lost to Albany State in the first round, 16-1.

During the regular season Savannah State defeated LeMoyne-Owen 12-7 in the SIAC Roundup on March 12 in Gardendale, Alabama.
