COLUMBUS, Ga.- Savannah State saw their historic season come to a close on Wednesday afternoon, following a 4-1 loss to Miles in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships being played at South Commons Park.
Both teams entered the elimination game, having battled weather delays.
The game was originally scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning but inclement weather pushed the start back to 8 p.m. Another weather delay moved the game to Wednesday at 2 p.m.
When the game was finally played, both squads scored runs in the first inning.
Unfortunately, for Savannah State, it was their only run of the contest.
After Miles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Savannah State came to bat in the bottom half of the inning and
Ansley Hudson found her way on base thanks to an error by the left fielder. A groundout by
Kaitlyn Williams allowed Hudson to advance to third base and a sacrifice fly to left field by
Jayla Alexander was deep enough for Hudson to cross home plate.
With no runs being scored in the second inning, Miles took control of the game with three runs off four hits in the third.
SSU had a chance to score a run in the fifth but came up empty when
Ariana Battle led off with a double down the right field line and made her way to third on an bunt attempt by
Zorianna Ford.
Savannah State finished the game with four hits while both teams stranded five runners on base.
Battle went 2-for-3 at the plate with a single and a double while Hudson and Williams both had singles.
Aaliyah Martin was tagged with the pitching loss. Martin pitched 2.1 innings and surrendered seven hits and four runs while striking out one.
Donnea Allen entered the game with one out in the top of the third and finished the final 4.2 innings, giving up one hit and three walks while recording two strikeouts.
Savannah State ends their season 27-18, setting a new school record for single season wins. The Lady Tigers had a 15-9 conference record.
