Forty Student-Athletes Earn Degrees At Spring Commencement

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Under hazy skies at Theodore A. Wright Stadium Friday Morning, 40 student-athletes were conferred degrees in the two-hundred and second Savannah State commencement.
 
Of those 40 student-athletes, 16 earned their degrees with honors. Savannah State student-athletes were highly productive in the classroom this academic year.  A total of 104 student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or higher this academic year, representing nearly 40% of total athletes at the University.
 
One of the most decorated Savannah State track and field/cross country stars in modern school history, Kayla Chance, also got it done in the classroom. Chance earned her degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA.
 
Also earning top honors was men's golfer Nicholas Macsuga who received his bachelor's degree in Business Management, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Basketball's Paris Thompson also graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Criminal Justice. 
 
Dual athlete Braxton Chadwick (football, track and field) graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Middle Grades Education. Chadwick also offered reflections to the graduating class on Friday.
 
A total of 12 student-athletes graduated Cum Laude on Friday. Among them were football players Davonte Johnson and Jordan Grant who both earned degrees in Computer Information Systems.
 
Baseball's Omar Almodovar earned his degree in Business Management with honors, as did football's Randall Corey and track and field's Erik Roberts.
 
Earning bachelor's in Mass Communications, graduating Cum Laude, were track and field's Anthony Tuggle, men's basketball stars—and twin brothers—Elavian and Eleik Bowles.
 
Football's Julian Roberts, softball's Jalexia Wright and track and field's Simone Johnson all earned bachelor's degrees in Biology, Cum Laude.
Starting offensive tackle Kyle Frazier earned an Associate of Science, graduating Cum Laude on Friday.
 
Three former student-athletes earned Master of Business Administration degrees; Wayne Ashford (men's basketball), Ta'Kyla Austin (women's basketball), and Travaughn Gordon (men's basketball). Former baseball player DeMorris Greshman was conferred a Master of Public Administration degree as well.
 
Sonya M. Halpern, Georgia State Senator, delivered the traditional commencement speech to a full crowd at Theodore A. Wright Stadium on Friday.
