Standout Kayla Chance Attends Black Student-Athlete Summit

LOS ANGELES, Cailf.- Recent Savannah State University student-athlete graduate Kayla Chance recently traveled to Los Angeles, California to attend the 2023 Black Student-Athlete Summit. The conference was held May 21-24 at the University of Southern California (USC).

Chance was among 1,200 student-athletes, professionals and influencers representing more than 170 colleges and universities, marking the summit's largest showing in history.

Highlights of this year's Summit included a brand-new Career Combine and Pro Day, plus sessions and forums featuring guests such as former NBA Champion Matt Barnes, Klutch Sports' Rich Paul, CNBC's Diana Olick, USC President Dr. Carol Folt, and USC Athletic Director Mike Bohn. Major topics of discussion covered the mental health of coaches, the experiences of Black Student-Athletes at elite institutions, the power of faith, community activism, and how Black Student-Athletes can own, buy, and sell real estate in their own communities.

Presenting partner Playfly Sports kicked off the Summit with a two-hour Playfly Career Combine on Sunday afternoon. The interactive session was crafted by Playfly leadership with the goal of preparing student-athletes to meet with employers who are offering full-time and internship opportunities and a deep dive on essential career readiness topics such resume and cover letter foundations, one-way interviewing, and LinkedIn best practices.

The schedule also included numerous networking experiences for student-athletes to meet one another, as well as leading professionals in the collegiate athletics and professional sports spaces. The "out of classroom" events included a Tuesday-night Game Night presented by Powerade, a newly appointed partner of the Summit for 2023.

Founded by Dr. Leonard Moore, the Black Student Athlete Summit brings together more than 1,200 Black Student-Athletes, professionals, and influencers from the world of college athletics to ensure greater support for Black Student-Athletes in the classroom and beyond so they can be globally competitive in the job market.

One of the most decorated Savannah State track and field/cross country stars in modern school history, Chance, also got it done in the classroom. The Savannah native earned her degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 Grade Point Average. She also received her Commission into the United States Military.
