Savannah, Ga. – Savannah State women's basketball continues to lead the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division into the back half of their regular season schedule.
Today opens a three-game homestand in which the Lady Tigers will fight for the No. 1 seed into the 2023 SIAC Championship Presented by Cricket—which will be hosted by Savannah State in Tiger Arena Feb. 25-March 4.
The Lady Tigers made their way back into the D2SIDA South Region Poll last week in the No. 10 spot. In the SIAC East Division standings, Savannah State leads with a 7-3 conference record followed by Clark Atlanta (7-4) and Allen (5-5).
LAST GAME
No. 10 Savannah State women's basketball dropped a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game in overtime at Clark Atlanta on Monday. Gibbs led SSU in the loss with 17 points and eight rebounds. Heard put up 11 points while Allen scored 10. Ta'Quasia Lampkin led SSU on defense with 13 rebounds, four steals, and four blocks. PLAYER OUTLOOK
Savannah State has juggled personnel this year due to eligibility issues and injuries. However, the veterans remain stalwarts in the statistics.
The Lady Tigers are led by junior guard #23 Amari Heard, who's putting up 15.4 points a game. Senior forward #22 Bria Gibbs has been key too, scoring 12.8 points a game. Redshirt freshman #20 Nyla Allen is averaging 14.6 points a game this season.
LAST GAME vs. EDWARD WATERS
Since returning to the SIAC and Division II in 2019, Savannah State is 5-0 against Edward Waters. The Tigers from Jacksonville joined the SIAC as a provisional team last year. This year, as official members, the games will count towards the SIAC schedule and standings. The teams last met in Jacksonville on February 5, 2022. Savannah State won 73-59.
OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT
In their first real year of competition in the SIAC, Edward Waters has picked up four conference wins. They enter today's game on a two-game win streak, after beating Fort Valley State on Jan. 9 (58-54) and Clark Atlanta on Jan. 14 (60-57).

Savannah, Ga. – The reigning SIAC Champions have been on a tear of late.
In the new year, the Tigers are 5-1 overall with their only loss of 2023 coming against Morehouse College last weekend. They currently lead the SIAC East Division standings with an 8-3 conference record.
Today, Savannah State opens a three-game homestand. They host Allen on Monday and Benedict next Wednesday.
LAST GAME
Savannah State men's basketball powered past Clark Atlanta on Monday with a strong second half to pick up their 10th win of the season.
At the half last Monday, the Tigers led by a single point, 29-28, after shooting 32.1% from the floor. Clark managed just a bit better, each team hitting only nine field goals each.
The Tigers improved their shooting in the second half, managing a 59.1% clip from the floor. Bowles led the team with 35 points on the night, going 13-for-21 from the field and 5-for-8 from deep. PLAYER OUTLOOK
Senior forward #30 Eleik Bowles has topped most of the stats this season for Savannah State. Bowles is averaging 16.6 points a game and leads the team in field goals made (96), three-point field goals made (21), rebounds (73), steals (27), and minutes (31.8/game).
But stepping up has been junior guard #11 Za'Khari Cobb (8.5 p/g) and sophomore guard #2 Ayjay Plain (9.3 p/g). On defense, senior guard #32 Elavian Bowles has also been key, pulling down 53 boards this season.
LAST GAME VS. EDWARD WATERS
Savannah State men's basketball has not played Edward Waters since returning to the SIAC and NCAA Division II in 2019. This will be the first game between the programs in modern history.
OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT
Edward Waters joined the SIAC and NCAA Division II as a provisional member last season. This is the program's first year of countable competition in their new conference and new division. They enter today's game on a two-game losing streak after falling to Clark Atlanta on Jan. 14 and University of Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 16.
They are led this year by two guards an a center. Guard #3 Tavares Oliver is averaging 19.5 points a game. Guard #00 Felix Hayes is putting up 13.3 points a game and center #5 Larry Kuimi is averaging 11.2 points a game.
