Lady Tigers Top Events, Set Personal Best At 2022 SIAC Championship

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Savannah State outdoor women's track and field team topped several events and set a number of personal best records at the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship this past weekend on the campus of Winthrop University.

School record holder, Kayla Chance led the Lady Tigers on the track. She won first place in the 5000m run with a time of 19:41.20.

Chance ran a 2:24.20 to finish third in the 800m final and a 2:25.16 to finish second in the preliminary race. Simone Johnson finished first in the 800m prelims with a time of 2:23.02. Johnson finished fourth in the finals with a time of 2:25.13.

Johnson set a new personal best in the 1500m final with a time of 5:13.10. Chance finished second in the event running a 5:06.47.

Several Lady Tigers set new personal best in the 100m preliminaries: Teauna Thomas ran a 12.20 for a third place finish; Jahvene Walder ran a 12.56 and Ravyn Cystrunk ran a 12.60. Thomas finished third in the100m finals with a time of 12.23.

Walder, Thomas and Cystrunk also set personal best in the 200m event. In the preliminaries, Thomas ran a 25.90 followed by Cystrunk who ran a 26.01. Walder set a best time of 25.77 with a fifth place finish in the 200m final.

In the 100m hurdles, Walder recorded a 15.83 to finish fourth in the preliminaries and then ran a 15.68 in the finals to finish fifth overall.
The team of Thomas, Cystrunk, Sadrea Mabry and Walder finished runner-up in the 4x100 relay with a time of 47.09.

Walder led Savannah State in field events. She secured the runner-up spot in the high jump with a 1.60m effort, followed by senior Toni Pellington who recorded a 1.45m jump.

Mabrey placed fourth in the long jump and triple jump events. She recorded a 5.29m effort in the long jump and an 11.87 meter mark in the triple jump. Mabry has already earned an NCAA Division II provisional mark for the triple jump event with a 12.25m effort at the Alice Coachman Invite last month.

In the shot put, Oniece Roberts set a new collegiate personal best with an 11.24m effort, finishing 10th overall. Sarah Ross set a new personal best in the discus event with a 28.82m toss, finishing 10th overall as well.

Savannah State women's outdoor track and field will run in one more event this season in order to help qualify as many student-athletes as possible ahead of the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

The Lady Tigers will compete at the Georgia Southern Spring Classic on April 30.
