Track & Field Continues Record-Setting Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field continued their record-setting season at the Gamecock Invitational this past weekend.
 
Savannah State's pandemic shortened season saw a host of runners and jumpers set new school records and personal best as they competed in several meets against some of the best track athletes in the nation.
 
This past weekend, the record setting continued, led by a pair of Lady Tigers.
 
For the second time this year, Kayla Chance set a new school record and personal best in the 1500m run. She recorded a 4:53.63 to finish 10th in the event.  Chance beat out her best of 4:54.40, set at Myrtle Beach last month. She surpassed Antionette Elam's previous school record of 4:59.01 which was set in 2002.
 
In kind, Jahvene Walder ran a 15.11 in the 100m hurdles to set a new personal best record this weekend.
 
Elsewhere on the track, Artexis Drake ran a 59.48 in the 400m finals to finish 23rd. Drake ran a 25.80 in the 200m, followed by teammate Ravyn Cystrunk who ran a 26.17. Senior Jaylen Sewell ran a 1:13.72 in the 400m hurdles, finishing in the middle of the pack.
 
In the long jump finals, Sadrea Mabry finished in 9th place with a 5.52m jump followed by teammate Da'Ailyah Johnson who recorded a 5.17m effort. Toni Pellington finished 11th in the high jump finals with a distance of 1.55m.

For the men, the relay team of Anthony Johnson, Joseph Bell, Jordan Davis and Tracey White finished 7th in the 4x100m relay with a time of 42.40.
 
Andre Valcin ran a 49.00 to finish in 11th place in the 400m finals. In the 100m finals, Bell finished in the middle of the pack with a 10.89, followed by White (10.92) and Johnson (11.42).
 
Wiltz ran a 14.86 to finish in 15th place in the 110m hurdles. Wiltz also recorded a 58.24 in the 400 hurdles to finished 22nd. Eric Roberts recorded a time of 4:37.74 in the 1500m hurdles to finish 21st.
 
Solomon Mitchell finished 17th in the long jump event with a 6.31m effort, leading the Tigers in the field.  
 
Savannah State might continue the spring with a post-season event yet to be announced following the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (SIAC) February decision to cancel all spring championships.
