Lady Tigers Lead Track Team At Myrtle Beach Challenge

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – In the second meet of the 2021 outdoor track and field season, Savannah State men's and women's teams competed at The Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge.

The Lady Tigers led the pack on the day with several top finishes and new school records. Overall, the Lady Tigers finished fourth in a field of 14 schools with a team score of 87.

Sophomore Kayla Chance set a new school record in the women's 1500 run with a time of 4:54.40, finishing in fourth place to lead the Lady Tigers. Chance finished second in the 800m dash, running a 2:25.00—a personal best this season. Chance broke Antionette Elam's school record of 4:59.01 in the 1500m, which she set in 2002.

Jaylen Swell won the 400m hurdles event with a time of 1:06.95. Jahvene Walder qualified for the finals of the 100m hurdles with a 15.38 and a fourth place finish. She ran a 15.32 in the finals to finish third. Walder won the high jump event with a 1.63m leap.

Sadrea Mabry recorded her first collegiate score of 5.58m, a personal best, in the long jump event, finishing second overall.

In the preliminaries of the 100m dash, Teauna Thomas qualified with a fifth place finish and a time of 12.29. Ravyn Cystrunk finished ninth in the same event with a time of 12.59, a few milliseconds short of qualifying. In the finals, Thomas ran a 12.32 to finish fourth.

The Lady Tiger relay team of Thomas, Cystrunk, Walder and Mabry finished second in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:44.11.

Leading the Tigers, Darryl Wiltz qualified for the finals of the 110m hurdles behind a new personal record of 14.67, finishing in first place in the preliminaries. Wiltz again broke his own personal best in the finals, finishing fourth overall with a time of 14.55.

In the men's 800m dash, Djangmah Nartmartey finished eighth with a time of 2:02.10. In the preliminaries of the men's 100m dash, Tracey White qualified for the finals with a 10^th place finish and a time of 10.93. White ran an 11.02 to finish in sixth place in the finals.

Anthony Tuggle ran a 1:07.95 for a 12^th place finish in the men's 400m hurdles. The relay team of Anthony Johnson, Solomon Mitchell, White and Jordan Davis finished fifth in the 4x100m with a time of 43.32.

In the field, Mitchell finished 12^th in the long jump, recording a distance of 6.43m.

The Tigers finished 10^th in the 14-team field with a team score of 18.

Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams continue the spring season at the Weems Baskin Invitational on March 26.
