SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened the 2020 season on windy but clear and sunny day Saturday with the annual Tiger Relays.
In the field of 14 teams, Savannah State combined to finish in third place overall with 153 team points—a combination of the men's and women's scores. The University of North Carolina Wilmington won the day with a team score of 281. Piedmont finished second (203).
Following Savannah State was Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe Central State (140). University of South Carolina Beaufort finished in fifth (102), followed by Voorhees (80), Brewton-Parker (67), Edward Waters (61), Tiger Track Club (46), Dalton State (39), Thomas University (35), Georgia College (16), Morris (14) and St. Andrews (12).
For the Lady Tigers,
Jaylen Sewell led the track effort. She nabbed a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.54 and second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.54.
In the 100m dash,
Corta Washington finished in second place with a time of 12.66. The relay team of
Danielle Chambers, Washington,
Sadrea Mabry and
Jahvene Walder finished in second place in the 4x100m women's relay with a time of 49.12.
Kayla Chance,
Jasmine Williams,
Karen Perez and Simone Johnson finished third in the distance medley with a time of 13:37.02. Â In the 4x400m relay, Chambers, Sewell, Johnson and Walder finished in fifth with a time of 4:29.96.
In the field, the Lady Tigers were led by Walder who finished second in the high jump with a distance of 1.65m, followed closely by teammate
Toni Pellington who finished third with a 1.55m jump.
Mabry finished fourth in the pole vault with a distance of 5.36m. Deneesha Wallace finished ninth in the shot put with a distance of 7.80m.
Savannah State men's and women's teams return to action next Saturday when they host the Savannah State Orange and Blue at Theodore A. Wright Stadium. Track events began at 11 a.m.
Outdoor track and field is an SIAC sponsored event and Savannah State will vie this season at the 2020 SIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The SIAC does not sponsor indoor track and field.
