Lady Tigers compete at Gamecock Indoor T&F Invite

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In the second meet of the 2020 indoor track and field season, Savannah State men's and women's teams competed at The University of South Carolina Gamecock Opener on Saturday.

Jahvene Walder led the Lady Tigers with a 5th place finish in the high jump. Walder recorded a 1.60 meter jump, tying her same effort in last week's University of Alabama Birmingham Vulcan Invite. Newcomer Toni Pellington was close behind Walder with an 8th place finish, jumping 1.55 meters.

Ny'em Bozeman, who doubles as a defensive back for Savannah State football, led the Tigers on the field with a 1.88 meter effort in the high jump, finishing in 9th place. Elsewhere on the field, in the long jump, former SSU football player Tracy Gaston recorded a 6.31 meter jump to finish in the top 25.

On the track, long distance runner Narhmartey Djangmah led the Tigers in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.13 for a 17th place finish. For the Lady Tigers, Corta Washington ran a 7.96 in the 60 meter dash to also finish in 17th. Symone Johnson finished the 800 meter run with a 2:25.63 to finish 18th.

Washington ran a 26.52 in the 200 meter dash, followed by newcomer Sadrea Mabry (27.96). Karen Perez ran a 6:04.50 in the women's 1 mile run, followed by Christy Turner (6:42.61).
Jaylen Sewell led SSU in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.33, followed by Jahvene Walder (9.67) and Karisma Roberts (10.05).

In men's track action, newcomer Kyce Gray led the Tigers in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.35, followed by Eric Johnson (7.75) and Gaston (7.81). Andre Valcin ran a 49.81 in the 400 meter dash for SSU. Long distance runner Suheib Mohamad ran a 4:41.38 in the men's 1 mile run. Demetri Coooper recorded a 9.28 in the 60 meter hurdles and Eric Johnson ran a 24.92 in the 200 meter dash.

Savannah State men's and women's indoor track and field teams continue the 2020 season with a return trip to Columbia for the USC Carolina Challenge on Jan. 31.  They close the season on Feb. 7 at the USC Open, also in Columbia, S.C.
