NORFOLK, Va. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (12-18) faces the top seed Bethune-Cookman University (19-9) in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Wednesday at noon in Scope Arena.
The winner moves on to face the winner of No. 4 seed Florida A&M University and No. 5 seed Norfolk State University Friday at noon.
The Lady Tigers defeated Morgan State 59-51 in the first round of the tournament Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals. Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss led the team with 15 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from the 3-point line, while senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix added 12 points, shooting 2-for-4 from 3-pointers. Senior guard
Rhianna Warren added 10 points, shooting 4-for-5 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from downtown and senior guard
Taylor-Ashley Shaw and senior center
Tiyonda Davis each added eight points. Shaw led the team with seven rebounds, while Davis added five rebounds.
Since joining the MEAC in the 2011-12 season, the Lady Tigers have posted a 6-4 record at the tournament, including a 6-2 record in the last three-plus seasons.
Bethune-Cookman holds a 20-8 advantage over the Lady Tigers and won the only meeting earlier this season with a 38-31 win on Jan. 4 in Tiger Arena for the MEAC opener.
Hendrix, who was named on the All-MEAC Third Team Friday, leads the Lady Tigers with 11.8 points per game, while Moss is averaging 11.0 points and 3.8 rebounds. Davis leads the team with 8.9 rebounds per game and with 3.8 blocks per game and averages 8.4 points, while senior forward
Jeremica Edwards added 6.6 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game.
In conference play, Hendrix leads the team with 12.2 points per game, while Moss averages 11.0 points and 4.1 rebounds. Davis leads the team with 10.1 rebounds per game and with 4.5 blocks per game and averages 9.6 points, while Edwards averages 7.2 points and 6.9 rebounds.
Davis ranks in the MEAC in rebounds per game (8.9), which ranks 55
th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and is second in blocks per game (3.8), which ranks third in the NCAA and third in the country with 106 blocks. In her career, the Athens, Ga., native holds the school record in the Division I era with 301 blocks and with 966 rebounds. She also ranks seventh with 911 career points and third with 392 career made field goals and holds the single season record with 106 blocks.
Hendrix holds the school record in the Division I era with 194 career made 3-point field goals and is the third Lady Tiger to record 1,000-plus points with 1,236, which ranks second, and ranks second with 426 made field goals.
Bethune-Cookman's only conference loss was to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore 59-56 on Jan. 21 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Wildcats are led by Kendra Cooper with 10.0 points per game, while Kailyn Williams leads the team with 8.1 rebounds and averages 9.8 points and Ashanti Hunt averages 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds.
