TUSKEGEE, Ala.- Savannah State saw their overall record fall to 7-16 following Thursday's 81-46 setback to Tuskegee in a game played at the James Center.
The first quarter was close but SSU fell behind by seven with a little over two minutes left in the quarter, following five unanswered points by Tuskegee.
Savannah State responded with two free throws from
Makaila Johnson and a layup and a free throw by
Jaliyah Harper to trim their deficit to 15-13.
Tuskegee closed out the quarter with a pair of free throws for a 17-13 advantage.
The Golden Tigers increased their lead to double digits early in the second quarter and led by as many as 15 before SSU's Saniyah Rice stole the ball and converted it into a layup at the end of the half.
Savannah State trailed 35-22 at intermission.
Tuskegee scored the first four points of the third quarter before a jumper by
Jazmin Thornton got SSU on the board with 8:07 left.
SSU had a short rally at the end of the quarter getting a 3-pointer and a jumper from Rice along with a layup from
Ansley Hicks to slice the Tuskegee lead to 63-35.
The Lady Tigers found themselves down by 34 in the fourth quarter but had some success, reeling off a 9-2 run as Thornton had three free throws, a jumper and a layup while
Haylee Malcum made a layup.
Thornton led SSU with 11 points and six rebounds while Harper added 10 points and six boards.
Rice finished with seven points and three steals, Johnson scored six points,
Sanai Chisholm had five, Malcum contributed four points and nine rebounds and Hicks ended the night with three points.
The Lady Tigers, who have a 6-16 SIAC record, will end their three-game road swing with a trip to Miles on Saturday afternoon.
