SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State saw their 2025-26 season come to an end on Tuesday night following their 62-58 loss to Lane in Tiger Arena.
The Lady Tigers end the season with a 7-18 overall and 6-18 SIAC record. Coming into the contest, Savannah State had sole possession of the sixth and final spot in the SIAC East to qualify for the SIAC Women's Basketball Championship, but the loss to Lane tied the Lady Tigers with Fort Valley State for sixth. FVSU won the the tiebreaker by virtue of beating Savannah State twice in head-to-head contests this season.Â
Lane opened the contest with the first six points but Savannah State answered with layups from
Sanai Chisholm and
Jaliyah Harper to make the score 6-4.
The Dragons led grew to five before a jumper by
Ansley Hicks and two free throws by
Jazmin Thornton cut the SSU deficit to 11-10 with 3:38 left.
Savannah State would only score two points the remainder of the quarter as Lane took a 16-12 lead.
The Dragons began to pull away in the second quarter, building a 12-point lead before a late layup by
Makaila Johnson sent the teams into the half with Savannah State trailing 31-21.
SSU trailed by double digits much of the third quarter but they were able to whittle away at the Dragons lead and back-to-back layups by Hicks and Harper pulled the Lady Tigers to within 43-41 with 1:55 left.
But Lane scored the final two points of the quarter to extend their advantage to six (47-41).
Layups by
Haylee Malcum and Harper to begin the final ten minutes of play drew the Lady Tigers to within 47-45.
The teams traded baskets until the Dragons put together a 6-0 run that gave them a 59-51 lead at the 2:29 mark.
Savannah State answered with a layup by Malcum and a 3-pointer by Chisholm to make it a three point game at 59-56 with just under two minutes left but were not able to get any closer.
Harper led Savannah State with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Hicks added 14 points, five rebounds and four steals while Malcum had ten points, nine rebounds and seven blocks.
Chisholm finished with nine points, Thornton contributed seven points, five blocks, five rebounds and three assists while Johnson had two points and seven rebounds.
