SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-11, 0-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) returns to the court Monday at 5 p.m. against Hampton University (7-7, 1-0 MEAC) in Hampton, Va., after having last Saturday's game postponed.
The Lady Tigers game against Norfolk State University that was scheduled on Jan. 7 was postponed to Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. due to weather conditions in the Norfolk, Va., area.
Savannah State starts a four-game stretch in seven days with at Hampton (1/9), at NSU (1/11), Florida A&M (1/14) and at South Carolina State (1/16).
The last time out, the Lady Tigers fell 38-31 to Bethune-Cookman in MEAC opener in Tiger Arena on Jan. 4. Senior center
Tiyonda Davis led the team with seven points, nine rebounds and four blocks, while senior forward
Jeremica Edwards added five points, seven rebounds and five steals.
Hendrix, who became the third SSU student-athlete to reach the 1,000-point milestone against No. 6 South Carolina, is 17 points behind second most in school history in the Division I era. The Carrollton, Ga., native has recorded 1,013 career points and also ranks fifth with 359 made field goals, six behind fourth place.
Senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix leads the team with 10.0 points per game, while graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss is averaging 9.8 points per game. Davis leads the team with 7.8 rebounds per game and with 3.3 blocks per game, and averages 6.6 points per game, while Edwards is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game and 4.8 points per game.
Davis ranks fifth in the MEAC in rebounds per game (7.8) and is second in blocks per game (3.3), which ranks seventh in the NCAA and 14
th in the country with 39 blocks.
After losing the first four games of the season, Hampton has won seven of the last 10 games, including the last two. In the Pirates MEAC opener, HU defeated North Carolina A&T State 64-57 in Hampton on Jan. 4. The Pirates are led by Malia Tate-DeFreitas, who was voted the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, with 17.3 points per game, and is averaging 5.2 rebounds per game, while Monnazjea Finney-Smith is averaging 9.7 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game and Kaylah Lupoe is averaging 6.4 rebounds per game and 7.8 points per game.
The Lady Tigers stay in the area to face Norfolk State Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., in Norfolk, Va.
