SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (22-21, 10-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) travels to Orangeburg, S.C., to face South Carolina State University (5-24, 2-10 MEAC) with a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon and a solo game on Sunday at noon.
With Bethune-Cookman University defeating Florida A&M University 7-1 Thursday, the Lady Tigers enter the weekend a ½ game up over B-CU and FAMU for the No. 1 seed in the Southern Division. SSU has won 12 of the last 15 games.
Junior
Alexis Singleton leads the Lady Tigers with a .411 (60-for-146) batting average and has recorded 26 runs scored, five doubles and 21 RBIs, while senior first baseman
Torrian Wright is batting .397 (27-for-68) with 19 runs scored, seven doubles, four home runs and 20 RBIs with a .676 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .664.
Freshman third baseman
Cortni Jones is batting .369 (45-for-122) with 31 runs scored, eight doubles, eight home runs and 33 RBIs with a .631 slugging percentage and a .420 on-base percentage, while junior left fielder
Chasney Jenkins is batting .339 (40-for-118) with 31 runs scored, three doubles, a triple, a home run and 17 RBIs with a .494 on-base percentage.
Singleton's batting average ranks fourth in the MEAC and 78
th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, while Wright's batting average ranks seventh in the conference and 113
th in the NCAA and Jones' batting average ranks ninth in the conference. Wright leads the MEAC and is second in NCAA in on-base percentage and leads the MEAC and the NCAA with 1.39 walks per game, while Jenkins is second in the MEAC with 0.81 walks per game, which ranks 19
th in the NCAA.
As a team, the Lady Tigers are hitting .311 (352-for-1132) with 215 runs scored, 56 doubles, nine triples, 21 home runs and 185 RBIs with a .432 slugging percentage and a .443 on-base percentage. The batting average ranks second in the MEAC and ranks 50
th in the NCAA and leads the MEAC in on-base percentage and 24
th in the NCAA and ranks second in home runs per game with 0.49, while SSU ranks third in the conference with 5.00 runs per game, which ranks 92
nd in the NCAA, and second in slugging percentage, which ranks 93
rd in the NCAA.
On the mound, freshman pitcher
Kasie Johnson leads the team with a 2.75 ERA with a 5-2 record giving up 19 earned runs on 52 hits in 48.1 innings pitched with 17 strikeouts, while Hallman has a 12-10 record with a 3.75 ERA with 14 complete games giving up 75 earned runs on 151 hits in 140.0 innings pitched with 115 strikeouts.
As a team, the Lady Tigers are sporting a 4.15 ERA giving up 170 earned runs on 333 hits in 286.1 innings pitched with 165 strikeouts.
South Carolina State has lost 15 of the last 16 games, including going 1-2 against North Carolina Central University.
The Lady Bulldogs are led by Cianna Burt with a .310 (18-for-58) batting average with seven runs scored, three doubles, a home run and eight RBIs, while Jada Richardson is batting .306 (22-for-72) with 15 runs scored, eight doubles, a home run and five RBIs and Jasmine Greer is batting .246 (15-for-61) with 12 runs scored, a double and three RBIs.
On the mound, Keirra Cromer leads the team with a 3-15 record and with a 11.19 ERA giving up 131 earned runs on 212 hits in 105.1 innings pitched, while Unique Whitehurst has a 2-8 record with an 18.07 giving up 89 earned runs on 102 hits in 44.1 innings pitched.
As a team, SCSU is hitting .216 (129-for-597) with 67 runs scored, 26 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 61 RBIs. On the mound, the Lady Bulldogs are sporting a 13.23 ERA giving up 220 earned runs on 314 hits in 149.2 innings pitched with 23 strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers enter postseason play at the MEAC Championship that starts on Thursday, May 12 and finishes with the championship game on Saturday, May 14.
