SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (16-17, 6-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) starts a 10-game homestand with Florida A&M University (21-22, 9-0 MEAC) in the battle of undefeated in conference play starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. and a solo game on Sunday at noon at the Lady Tiger Softball Field for SSU's MEAC home opener.
The Lady Tigers are on a six-game winning streak after sweeping Bethune-Cookman University 1-0, 4-3 and 4-1 in Daytona Beach and North Carolina Central University 9-0, 5-2 and a 15-11 comeback victory.
Sophomore shortstop
Brianna Harris was named the MEAC Player of the Week after recording a .615 (8-for-13) batting average with eight runs scored, five RBIs, three doubles and a triple with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .643 on-base percentage, while teammate freshman third baseman
Cortni Jones was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week on Monday after batting .500 (6-for-12) with a run scored and a double.
Senior first baseman
Torrian Wright leads the Lady Tigers with a .415 (22-for-53) batting average and has recorded 13 runs scored, seven doubles, two home runs and 14 RBIs with a .660 slugging percentage and a .652 on-base percentage, which leads the MEAC and in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, while her batting average ranks third in the conference and 78
th in the NCAA. The McDonough, Ga., native leads the conference and in the NCAA with 1.38 walks per game and leads the conference in slugging percentage.
Junior right fielder
Alexis Singleton raised her batting average from .382 to .409 after batting .615 batting average at NCCU. Singleton leads the team and ranks third in the MEAC with 47 hits and has added 20 runs scored, five doubles and 13 RBIs with a .452 slugging percentage and a .429 on-base percentage, while sophomore center fielder
Shelby Eccles is batting .373 (13-for-83) with 13 runs scored, two doubles, two triples and six RBIs with .446 slugging percentage and a .402 on-base percentage.
Freshman
Cortni Jones is batting .362 (34-for-94) with 20 runs scored, five doubles, seven home runs, 26 RBIs with a .638 slugging percentage and a .388 on-base percentage, while junior left fielder
Chasney Jenkins is batting .333 (29-for-87) with 24 runs scored, a double, a triple, a home run and 14 RBIs with a .402 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.
Singleton's batting average ranks fourth in the MEAC and ranks 93
rd in the NCAA, while Jones' batting average ranks 10
th in the conference and her slugging percentage ranks second in the conference. Jenkins' on-base percentage ranks second in the conference and 72
nd in the NCAA, while Jenkins runs scored ranks tied for ninth in the conference and Singleton's 47 hits ranks third. Jones leads the MEAC in home runs and ranks tied for third in RBIs, while Jenkins ranks second in the MEAC with 0.88 walks per game, which ranks 11
th in the NCAA.
As a team, the Lady Tigers are hitting .312 (275-for-881) with 154 runs scored, 44 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs and 137 RBIs with a .431 slugging percentage and a .408 on-base percentage. The batting average ranks second in the MEAC and ranks 50
th in the NCAA, while the slugging percentage ranks second in the conference and ranks 100
th in the NCAA. The Lady Tigers lead the MEAC in on-base percentage and 28
th in the NCAA and ranks second in home runs per game with 0.52, while SSU ranks third in the conference with 4.67 runs per game and fourth with 1.33 doubles per game.
On the mound, freshman pitcher
Kasie Johnson leads the team with a 2.43 earned run average giving up 11 earned runs on 29 hits in 31.2 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts, two complete games, including one shutout, while Hallman is sporting a 4.94 ERA giving up 72 earned runs on 122 hits in 102.0 innings pitched with a team-best 76 strikeouts and nine complete games, including one shutout.
Hallman's 76 strikeouts ranks fifth in the leaguer and ranks fourth in holding opponents to a .282 batting average.
As a team, the Lady Tigers are sporting a 4.64 ERA giving up 144 earned runs on 257 hits in 217.1 innings pitched with 117 strikeouts.
FAMU lost the doubleheader to Jacksonville 8-6 and 4-0 on Wednesday, but has won 12 of the last 15 games, including all nine conference games.
The Rattlers are led by Whitney Farris (37-for-93) and Tashayia Irvis (35-for-88) with a .398 batting average, while Jessica Nathan is batting .359 (52-for-145) with 31 runs scored, eight doubles, eight triples, three home runs and 20 RBIs. Farris has added 28 runs scored, two doubles and six RBIs and Irvis has added 27 runs scored, three doubles, one home run and 13 RBIs.
On the mound, Kenya Pereira has a 10-10 record with a 3.34 ERA, giving up 67 earned runs on 120 hits in 140.1 innings pitched with 108 strikeouts, while Veronica Burse is sporting a 6-10 record with a 4.26 ERA, giving up 61 earned runs on 122 hits in 100.1 innings pitched with 63 strikeouts.
As a team, FAMU is hitting .301 (337-for-1119) with 195 runs scored, 55 doubles, 14 triples, 21 home runs and 178 RBIs. On the mound, the Rattlers are sporting a 3.75 ERA giving up 147 earned runs on 278 hits in 274.2.0 innings pitched with 188 strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers continue their homestand with a nonconference battle against Jacksonville with a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.
