SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (10-17) opens Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play traveling to Daytona Beach, Fla., to face Bethune-Cookman University (5-21), who was picked to win the Southern Division with a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. and a solo game on Saturday at noon.
The Lady Tigers are looking to snap a four-game losing streak after losing to Syracuse 8-2 in game one and 7-0 in game two and to Buffalo 6-3 in game one and 9-0 in game two. Before that, SSU won the previous four games against Grambling State 8-0, Mississippi Valley State 11-9 and two games against Maryland Eastern Shore 2-1 in game one and 8-2 in six innings in game two.
Senior first baseman
Torrian Wright leads the Lady Tigers with a .452 (19-for-42) batting average and has recorded 11 runs scored, seven doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs with a slugging percentage of .762 and an on-base percentage of .647, while sophomore center fielder
Shelby Eccles has recorded a .387 (24-for-62) batting average with eight runs scored, two doubles, two triples and six RBIs with a .484 slugging percentage and a .424 on-base percentage. Wright leads the conference with 23 walks.
Junior right fielder
Alexis Singleton is batting .385 (35-for-91) with 15 runs scored, eight RBIs with a slugging percentage of .418 and a .404 on-base percentage, while freshman third baseman
Cortni Jones is batting .352 (25-for-71) with four doubles, a team-best five home runs, 22 RBIs with a .620 slugging percentage and a .380 on-base percentage.
The 17 runs scored by Jones ranks tied for sixth in the MEAC, while her 22 RBIs leads the conference, her five home runs is tied for first place and her .620 slugging percentage ranks third in the conference. Singleton's 35 hits are tied for the league best, her .385 batting average ranks fifth in the conference.
Right fielder
Chasney Jenkins is batting .348 (24-for-69) with 18 runs scored, a double, a triple, a home run and 11 RBIs with a .435 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. Her 20 walks this season, ranks second in the MEAC, while the 18 runs scored ranks tied for fourth in the conference.
As a team, the Lady Tigers are hitting .301 (211-for-701) with 116 runs scored, 36 doubles, four triples, 13 home runs and 103 RBIs with a .419 slugging percentage and a .398 on-base percentage. The .301 batting average leads the conference and ranks 82
nd in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, while the .419 slugging percentage leads the MEAC and ranks 115
th in the NCAA. The Lady Tigers ranks second in the MEAC in doubles per game with 1.33 and third in home runs per game with 0.48 and fourth in scoring with 4.30 runs per game.
On the mound, freshman pitcher
Kasie Johnson leads the team with a 2.03 Earned Run Average giving up nine earned runs on 28 hits in 31.0 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts, two complete games, including one shutout, while junior pitcher
Amanda Hallman is sporting a 5.64 ERA giving up 62 earned runs on 102 hits in 77.0 innings pitched with a team-best 55 strikeouts and seven complete games.
Johnson's ERA leads the conference and ranks 96
th in the NCAA, while Hallman's 55 strikeouts ranks second in the league.
As a team, the Lady Tigers are sporting a 5.05 ERA giving up 128 earned runs on 221 hits in 177.1 innings pitched with 90 strikeouts.
Bethune-Cookman is 2-3 in the current homestand, but has lost the last three games to Tennessee-Martin 9-1 and Marist 3-2 and 5-2.
The Lady Wildcats are led by Iesha Waters with a .364 (28-for-77) batting average with 12 runs scored, four doubles, three home runs and 16 RBIs, while Annie Bakenhus is batting .317 (26-for-82) with 14 runs scored, a double and five RBIs, Brianna Sanders is batting .315 (23-for-73) with 11 runs scored, a triple, a home run and nine RBIs and Kaitlin Alamprese is batting .306 (22-for-72) with 11 runs scored, two doubles, two triples, two home runs and eight RBIs.
On the mound, Deidra Genera leads the team with a 3-6 record and with a 3.96 ERA giving up 30 earned runs on 70 hits in 53.0 innings pitched with 34 strikeouts, while Sabrina Anguiano is sporting a 1-1 record with an ERA of 5.46 ERA giving up 64 earned runs on 127 hits in 82.0 innings pitched with 48 strikeouts.
As a team, B-CU is hitting .266 (173-for-651) with 83 runs scored, 16 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 63 RBIs. On the mound, the Lady Wildcats are sporting a 5.21 ERA giving up 121 earned runs on 231 hits in 162.2 innings pitched with 98 strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers continue on the road traveling to Durham, N.C., to face North Carolina Central University (3-24) next weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a solo game on Sunday at noon.
