SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (10-15) hosts University at Buffalo (4-19) in a doubleheader Friday starting at noon at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
Senior first baseman
Torrian Wright leads the Lady Tigers with a .444 (16-for-36) batting average, which ranks second in the MEAC, and has added 11 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs with a .750 slugging percentage and a .656 on-base percentage.
Junior right fielder
Alexis Singleton is batting .405 (34-for-84) with 15 runs scored, three doubles and eight RBIs with a .440 slugging percentage and a .419 on-base percentage, while sophomore center fielder
Shelby Eccles is also batting .387 (24-for-62) with eight runs scored, two doubles, two triples and six RBIs with a .484 slugging percentage and a .424 on-base percentage. Singleton's batting average ranks seventh in the conference, while Eccles' batting average ranks ninth. Singleton leads the MEAC with 34 hits.
Freshman third baseman
Cortni Jones, who was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week on Monday, is batting .352 (25-for-71) with 17 runs scored, four doubles, a team-best five home runs and 22 RBIs with a .620 slugging percentage and a .380 on-base percentage. Junior left fielder
Chasney Jenkins is batting .344 (21-for-61) with 17 runs scored, a double, a triple, a home run and 11 RBIs with a .443 slugging percentage and a .512 on-base percentage.
Jones leads the MEAC with 22 RBIs and with five home runs and is tied for third with Jenkins with 17 runs scored. Jones also leads the conference with 44 total bases.
On the mound, freshman pitcher
Kasie Johnson leads the team with a 1.81 ERA pitching two complete games with one shutout giving up seven earned runs in 27.0 innings pitched with eight strikeouts, while junior pitcher
Amanda Hallman, who was named the MEAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, is sporting a 5-7 record with a 5.49 ERA with seven complete games and has given up 58 earned runs in 74.0 innings pitched with a team-best 54 strikeouts.
Johnson's ERA leads the MEAC and ranks 80
th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, has allowed 5.19 hits per game, which leads the conference and 66
th in the NCAA and ranks second in the conference with 1.04 walks allowed per seven innings, which ranks 31
st in the NCAA.
As a team, the Lady Tigers are hitting .302 (195-for-645), which leads the MEAC and ranks 78
th in the NCAA and has recorded 113 runs scored, 33 doubles, four triples, 12 home runs and 100 RBIs. On the mound, SSU is sporting a 5.01 ERA, which ranks third in the conference, giving up 117 earned runs in 163.1 innings pitched with 83 strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers lead the conference in doubles per game with 1.32, slugging percentage of .422, on-base percentage of .414, and second in scoring with 4.52 runs per game and with 0.48 home runs per game.
After winning the first game of the March in extra innings for the third win in a row, Buffalo has lost the next 13 games, including a doubleheader sweep by South Carolina, 7-4 in game one and 10-2 in game two in five innings the last time out.
The Bulls are led by Savanna Norcio with a .383 (23-for-60) batting average with 13 runs scored, six doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs, while Katie Wiemer is batting .378 (28-for-74) with 14 runs scored, three doubles, three triples, six home runs and 26 RBIs and Leandra Jew is batting .305 (18-for-59) with nine runs scored, three doubles and four RBIs.
On the mound, Brieanna Baker leads the team with a 6.00 ERA and has recorded a 1-5 record giving up 28 earned runs in 42.0 innings pitched with 33 strikeouts, while Charlotte Miller is sporting a 1-3 record and a 6.67 ERA giving up 21 earned runs in 28.1 innings pitched with 18 strikeouts.
As a team, Buffalo is hitting .267 (172-for-644) with 95 runs scored, 23 doubles, eight triples, 19 home runs and 89 RBIs and has recorded an ERA of 7.26 giving up 120 earned runs in 148.2 innings pitched with 105 strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series against Bethune-Cookman starting with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. and finishes the series with a single game on Saturday at noon.
