SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women's basketball's (2-8) hosts No. 6 University of South Carolina (9-1) Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena for the second consecutive game against a top-12 team.
 
The Lady Tigers continue their difficult stretch with five consecutive opponents that made the postseason play last season.  SSU fell to Auburn University (12/11) 75-46 last time out, and at No. 11 Washington (12/18) 87-36, and hosts South Carolina (12/21).  All three teams made the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, while Florida Gulf Coast University (1/2) and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Bethune-Cookman (1/4) made the National Invitational Tournament.
 
The last time out, the Lady Tigers fell to No. 11 Washington 87-36 in Seattle, Wash. Junior guard Deyja Brown led SSU with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting from the arc, while senior center Tiyonda Davis led the team with nine rebounds and five blocks and added four points.  Senior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw added eight points and senior guard Kenyata Hendrix added six points.
 
Davis' five blocks against the Huskies gave her 227 career blocks, which set the school record in the Division I era.  Alisha Nelson had the previous record at 223 career blocks from 2008-12.  The Athens, Ga., native already has the rebounding school record with 793 career boards, 109 more than second place and ranks nine in scoring with 744 career points, four from eighth place and seventh in made field goals with 325. 
 
Hendrix needs 11 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone as she has recorded 989 career points.  The Carrollton, Ga., native would be the third SSU student-athlete to reach the milestone in the Division I era.  Hendrix set the school record in made 3-pointers against Georgia Southern on Dec. 1 and has record 160 made career 3-points.  She also ranks fifth in school history with 351 made fields goals.
 
Davis ranks tied for fourth in the MEAC in rebounds per game (8.3) and is second in blocks per game (3.56), which ranks fourth in the NCAA and eighth in the country with 32 blocks. 
 
Moss leads SSU with 11.5 points per game this season, while Hendrix is second with 10.6 points per game.  Davis leads the team with 8.3 rebounds per game, and with 3.56 blocks per game and is averaging 7.4 points per game, while senior forward Jeremica Edwards is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game and 5.6 points per game.
 
South Carolina's only loss on the season was at Duke 74-63 on Dec. 4.  The Gamecocks have won four games against ranked opponents this season with wins over at No. 7/6 Ohio State (92-80), vs. No. 4 Louisville (83-59), at No. 14/15 Texas (76-67) and against No. 9 UCLA (66-57).  SC is led by A'ja Wilson with 16.2 points per game and is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game, while Alaina Coates is averaging 15.2 points per game and 11.1 rebounds per game and Kaela Davis with 14.4 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game.
 
The Lady Tigers takes 10 days off for Christmas before traveling to Ft. Myers, Fla., to face Florida Gulf Coast Monday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
