SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-6) begins a two-game roadstand with a trip to Auburn, Ala., to face Auburn University (6-2) Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
Over the next five games, the Lady Tigers faces opponents that made postseason play last season. Auburn, University of Washington and University of South Carolina all made the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, while Florida Gulf Coast University and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Bethune-Cookman made the National Invitational Tournament.
The last time out, the Lady Tigers fell to Jacksonville State, 64-57 last Saturday in Tiger Arena to conclude a three-game homestand. Savannah State trailed by 16 points, but clawed back to take a point lead, but JSU retook the lead and won by seven points. Senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix led SSU with 16 points, while junior guard
Kierstan Green added 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting in 10 minutes and graduate student Lauren "Gaby" Moss added 10 points.
Hendrix needs 25 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone as she has recorded 975 career points. The Carrollton, Ga., native would be the third SSU to reach the milestone in the Division I era. Hendrix set the school record in made 3-pointers against Georgia Southern on Dec. 1 and has record 157 made career 3-points. She also ranks fifth in school history with 346 made fields goals.
Senior center
Tiyonda Davis needs four blocks to set the school record in the Division I era and has recorded 220 career blocks. Alisha Nelson recorded 223 career blocks from 2008-12. Davis already has the school record in rebounding with 776 career boards, 92 more than second place. The Athens, Ga., native also ranks ninth in scoring (733) and seventh in made field goals (321).
Davis ranks fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in rebounds per game (8.3) and is second in blocks per game (3.6), which ranks fifth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Moss leads SSU with 13.5 points per game this season, while Hendrix is second with 11.5 points per game. Davis leads the team with 8.3 rebounds per game and with 3.6 blocks per set, while senior forward
Jeremica Edwards is averaging 8.1 rebounds per game.
After Auburn started the season winning the first five games including a win over MEAC opponent North Carolina A&T State 68-36, but has lost two of the last three games to West Virginia (56-52) and at Kansas State (71-66). The Tigers are led by Brandy Montgomery with 15.5 points per game and is averaging 3.5 rebounds per game, while Katie Frerking is averaging 8.5 rebounds per game and 14.9 points per game and Janiah McKay is averaging 11.0 points per game.
The Lady Tigers take a week-off before traveling to Seattle, Wash., to face No. 11 University of Washington at 5 p.m. ET.
