SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (1-1) hosts Alabama State University (0-2), who won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Title last season, Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
The Lady Tigers won the last time out with a 68-52 win over Columbia College Sunday in Tiger Arena. Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss led the team with 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting with six rebounds, while senior center
Tiyonda Davis led the way with 20 rebounds and six blocks. Senior forward
Jeremica Edwards added 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting with seven rebounds, while senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix added 12 points.
Moss was named the MEAC Player of the Week on Monday as she averaged 19.5 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, 2.0 assists per game and 0.5 steals per game. Davis was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week as she averaged 17.0 rebounds per game, 9.5 points per game, 3.5 blocks per game, 2.5 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game.
After two games, Davis leads the National Collegiate Athletic Association with 34 rebounds, ranks seventh in blocked shots (7), ninth in defensive rebounds per game (10.0), and blocked shots per game (3.5).
Hendrix needs seven made 3-point field goals to set a school-record in the Division I era. The Carrollton, Ga., native has recorded 147 career 3-pointers, ranks sixth with 905 points, 37 points from fifth place, and fifth in field goals made with 321.
Davis became the second player in school history in the Division I era to record 200-plus blocks in a career. The Athens, Ga., native has recorded 202 career blocks and trails first place by 21 blocks. Davis already holds the school record with 752 career rebounds and ranks ninth in made field goals with 306 and 10
th in points with 696.
The Hornets have lost both games this season to North Carolina (84-54) and to Georgia Tech (70-48) and are led by Britney Wright with 20.0 points per game and with 8.0 rebounds per game, while Daniele Ewert is averaging 11.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game.
The Lady Tigers last game before Thanksgiving is a road trip to Ames, Iowa to face Iowa State University Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. ET.
