SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Savannah State University women's basketball team travels to face Seton Hall University Friday at 11 a.m. to begin the 2016-17 season in Walsh Gymnasium.

The Lady Tigers are 26-8 in season openers and has won the last 12 openers.  The last lost to begin the season was in 2004 when SSU fell to Alabama State 50-44 in Tiger Arena.

The last time Savannah State started the season on the road was in 2007, when SSU traveled to Sumter, S.C., to face Voorhees College at a neutral site.  The last true road game to start the season was the year before when the Lady Tigers defeated Allen University 79-60 on Nov. 14, 2006 in Columbia, S.C.

The two schools have met only once before with the Pirates coming away with a 51-42 home win on Nov. 29, 2013.

Senior guard Kenyata Hendrix, who was voted on the preseason All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Second Team, enters the season trailing Ezinne Kalu by 11 made 3-pointers to set the school record in the Division I era.  The Carrollton, Ga., native has made 143 career 3-pointers, including a school-record 62 last season.  Hendrix also ranks seventh in field goals made (313), seven behind fifth place and sixth in 883 points.

Senior center Tiyonda Davis, who was voted on the preseason All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Third Team, is second in blocks with 195, trailing by 29 blocks.  The Athens, Ga., native has the school record in rebounds with 718 in the Division I era, eighth in made field goals (300) and 10th in scoring (677).

The Lady Tigers also returns four others seniors of center Caprisha Treadwell, who missed 13 games last season, guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw, guard Rhianna Warren and forward Jeremica Edwards

Senior forward Charmia Graham and redshirt junior Aiyannah Peal returns to the court after sitting out the entire season with injuries.  The Lady Tigers also returns junior guard Lauryn Fields, junior guard Deyja Brown and sophomore Jacqueline Anderson.

Savannah State welcomes four newcomers, including two transfers.  Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss transferred from Georgia State and junior guard Kierstan Green transferred from Coastal Georgia, while freshman guard Praise Russell (Jacksonville, Fla.) and forward Jessica Satterwhite (Hampton, S.C.) starts their college careers at Savannah State.

Savannah State's nonconference schedule is a tough one this season facing six teams that made the National Collegiate Athletic Association of Seton Hall, Alabama State, Jacksonville, Auburn, Washington and South Carolina.  South Carolina made the Sweet 16, while Washington made it to the Final Four.

SSU toughest part of the schedule is at the end of the 2016 and the beginning of 2017 as the Lady Tigers face five teams that made the postseason.  AU, UW and USC made the NCAA Tournament, while Florida Gulf Coast and Bethune-Cookman made the National Invitational Tournament.

Last season, the Lady Tigers finished fourth in scoring defense giving up 59.2 points per game, first in field goal percentage defense (35.7), second in 3-point field percentage (30.9) and third in blocked shots per game (4.3).

The Lady Tigers host Columbia College Sunday at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena for their home opener, followed by Alabama State University Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
