Women’s Basketball Picks Up Key Conference Win

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lady Tigers overcame a mediocre opening half to pick up their sixth Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win of the season, beating Morgan State 72-58 at Hill Field House in Baltimore, Maryland.

While the Lady Tigers have been dominate on their home court this (6-3 this season with wins against Florida and Hampton, and 16-5 over the last two years), SSU has also been fierce on the road. With the win, they improve to 5-6 away, 11-10 overall and 6-3 in the MEAC.

Morgan State and SSU entered the seventh game in the overall series with the same conference record, vying for third place in the overall standings. The Lady Tigers take sole possession of third behind No. 2 Norfolk (7-3) and No. 1 Hampton (7-2); two teams they have beat this year.

SSU was led by three of their key starters. Kenyata Hendrix led the field with 20 points on the night, going 3-for-7 from downtown. After shooting 33.3 percent from the field in the first half, Bria Dorsey came alive in the second period, finishing with a season-high 19 points.

Tiyonda Davis recorded her first double-double of the year, grabbing 10 boards and scoring 10 points. MEAC preseason player of the year Ezinne Kalu had a rare night off, finishing with eight points. Her lowest scoring effort of the season.

The Lady Tigers opened the game with a 10-2 run in the first four minutes. SSU's defensive plan kept Morgan State from scoring any field goals in the first eight minutes of play. The Lady Bears, however, took advantage of several trips to the free-throw line.

SSU's offense began to wane midway through the period as Morgan State finally opened some scoring from the field. After trailing 14-4 at the 13:16 mark, Morgan State opened an 11-4 run to cut SSU's lead to 18-15 with 9:28 to play.

With 4:28 to play in the half, Morgan State knotted the game up for the first time on a layup from Lexus Spears. Down the stretch, a back and forth ensued. Tracey Carrington sank a layup with 29 seconds to tie the game up at 31.

On an inbounds pass with 6 seconds on the clock, Jasmine Norman drained a quick layup to give SSU the 33-31 advantage into the locker room.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half. SSU shot 35.5 percent from the field, while Morgan State managed a 26.7 percent clip. However, the Lady Bears shot 70 percent from the charity strip, hitting 14-of-20 attempts in the half.

Savannah State came out stronger in the second half. They opened with a 12-3 run for a 45-35 lead in the first six minutes. SSU held onto a double-digit lead for the rest of the game, as they improved to a 45.2 percent shooting clip from the floor.

Morgan State improved their scoring in the second half as well, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lady Tigers. They shot 28.8 percent from the floor on the night. SSU outscored Morgan State 39-27 in the second period.

Carrington led Morgan State with 14 points. She was perfect from the charity strip, hitting 8-of-8 attempts. Braennan Farrar followed Carrington with 13 points.

SSU continues the Baltimore trip with a visit to the other side of town and Coppin State on Monday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
