Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Delaware State

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – Savannah State concluded the best Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) road swing in the program's history with a 76-45 rout of Delaware State on Monday in Dover, Del.

The Lady Tigers finish the four-game road stretch 3-1 with wins over N.C. Central and N.C. A&T State, and a loss to Maryland Eastern Shore.
SSU improves to 8-9 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC. They are currently third in the conference standings.

Cedric Baker, in his 12th year at the helm for SSU, remains undefeated against Delaware State, earning his third career win against the Hornets.

SSU was led by sophomore Kenyata Hendrix, who shot 50 percent from downtown (4-for-8), finishing with 20 points. MEAC Preseason Player of the Year Ezinne Kalu followed Hendrix with 16 points. It was the 15th time this season Kalu has recorded double-digit scoring.

The Lady Tigers were led on defense by sophomore Tiyonda Davis who corralled a career and season-high 15 boards.

Savannah State got some stellar help from the bench in Monday's win. Freshman Lauryn Fields recorded a season-high 10 points, shooting 80 percent from the field. After missing 12 games with a broken nose, sophomore Rhianna Warren came off the bench to score a season-high 8 points.

After a sloppy start for both teams and a scoreless three minutes, SSU came alive on both ends of the court. The Lady Tiger offense got sparked behind a layup from Jasmine Norman at the 16:48 mark that opened a 9-0 run for SSU over the following three minutes.

Later in the half, Kalu registered back-to-back field goals to lift the Lady Tigers to a 15-4 lead, and a double-digit advantage they would hold for the rest of the half.

With 2:33 to play in the first period, Fields drained a jump shot to lift SSU to their largest lead of the half, 30-11. But, Delaware State was undeterred in the final minutes of the period, going on a 5-2 run to close out the half. Into the locker room SSU led 35-21.

The Lady Tigers scored 18 of those 35 points off turnovers and 20 of them in the paint. The Hornets had 21 costly turnovers in the half.

Into the second period, SSU's intense press defense from the first half was loosened and Delaware State took advantage with a 14-2 run that cut the Lady Tigers' lead to under double-digits, 45-37, with 11:50 to play.

Warren drained a 3-pointer at the 11:34 mark to stop the Delaware State run, and open a massive offensive from the Lady Tigers. Over the subsequent eight minutes, SSU's defense held the Hornets to two points as they put in 29, for the final runaway win.

With 3:12 to play, Fields drained a 3-pointer to lift the Lady Tigers to their largest lead of the game, 72-39.  In the SSU spurt, Hendrix and Warren led SSU with 8 points each.

SSU scored 42 of their 76 points in the paint, 31 off turnovers and 22 from bench players. The Lady Tigers shot 53.8 percent from 3-point range, and 47.1 percent from the field.

Delaware State was led by last week's MEAC Player of the Week Tierra Hawkins, who scored 16 points on the night. Mikah Aldridge put in 14 to join Hawkins at the top of the Hornets leaderboard. DSU shot 36.2 percent from the field and 64.4 percent from the charity strip. They fall to 3-13 on the season and 1-3 in the MEAC.

The Lady Tigers return to Tiger Arena this coming weekend to open a tough three-game home stand. SSU faces five-time defending MEAC Champion Hampton, before taking on second-place Norfolk State, and then end with N.C. A&T State, who was picked to win the MEAC in a preseason poll.
