Women’s Basketball Falls To Florida State

Box Score

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  – Behind a strong second period and some stellar 3-point shooting, Florida State routed the Lady Tigers, 97-51, in Tallahassee on Friday night.

Savannah State held with the now 11-1 Seminoles during the first period, but were plagued with fouls and costly turnovers that cut their offensive output drastically in the second period.

In the opening three minutes of the game, teams traded points, but Florida State took a small advantage behind some quick baskets. With 17:22 on the clock, Jasmine Norman drained a short jump shot to cut Florida State's lead to 6-4.

Norman ended the night with 13 points and 8 rebounds. It was her second consecutive game in double-digits after putting up 12 on Auburn this past Wednesday.

Morgan Jones drained her first of four 3-pointers on the night to spark a 10-2 run from the Seminoles that lifted the home team to a 16-6 lead with 14:43 to play.
Jones went 4-for-5 from beyond the arch and 5-for-7 from the field, ending with 14 points on the night. Florida State hit 7-of-18 3-point offerings on the night.

Trailing 11-23 with 10:23 to play in the first half, SSU's offensive came alive with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes. Tanease Richardson drained a free-throw at the eight minute mark to cut Florida State's lead to 23-20.

Morgan broke Florida State's scoring drought with a 3-pointer and three minutes later hit another one to spark a 6-0 run for the Seminoles. SSU cut the run with a 4-0 spurt of their own, but Florida State again pulled away in the final two minutes of the half.

Florida State scored the final three points for a 45-29 advantage into the locker room.

The Lady Tigers were plagued by fouls in the opening period. Jada Young and Richardson ended the first period with four fouls each. SSU ended the game with a season-high 32 team fouls with four Lady Tigers fouling out.

Despite a strong outing from the Lady Tigers in a fast paced, back and forth first half, an intensified defensive effort from Florida State shifted the momentum of the game in the second half.

The Seminoles opened a 14-4 run in the first seven minutes of the second period. Florida State outscored the Lady Tigers 52-22 in the second period for the final 46-point spread.

Redshirt senior Ezinne Kalu led the Lady Tigers for the seventh consecutive game with 19 points. It was also her seventh game in double-digits. SSU shot 81.8 percent from the charity strip on the night, hitting 9 of their 11 free offerings.

Florida State was led by Shakayla Richardson who put in 19 points on the night. Adut Bulgak went 5-for-13 from the field scoring 15 points on the night. Ivey Slaughter and Brittany Brown each added 13 points.

The Lady Tigers fall to 4-5 on the season and conclude the year's toughest road stretch with the Eighth Annual Fordham Holiday Classic Dec. 29-30 in Bronx, New York. They return home on Jan. 4 to face Jacksonville University.

SSU is 0-8 against ACC teams in their NCAA Division I history. Florida State is the only ACC team they will face this year.
