SSU's Amara Jones Garners Third MEAC Athlete of the Week Award

NORFOLK, Va. &ndash; Savannah State senior Amara Jones was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women&rsquo;s Track Athlete of the Week for the week ending March18 the conference announced today.<br /> <br /> This is Jones third MEAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week award in Savannah State&rsquo;s first year competing in the conference. She won two during the indoor track and field season. This marks the first outdoor track and field MEAC award for Savannah State.<br /> <br /> Jones won the 400m dash with a time of 53.52 and was second in the 200m dash (23.81) at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational. She was also a member of the 4x200m relay that was third with a time of 1:38.70 and the 4x100m relay team that finished fifth in 46.77.<br /> <br /> Jones won her last award for the week ending February 3, after capturing top honors in two events at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina, January 27. Jones won the 200m race with a time of 24.55, and then won the 400m race with a time of 55.16.<br /> <br /> North Carolina A&amp;T freshman Everette Slocum and Maryland Eastern Shore senior Vanessa Henry were chosen as the MEAC Men&rsquo;s and Women&rsquo;s Field Athletes of the Week, while Hampton senior Reggie Dixon was name MEAC Men&rsquo;s Track Athlete of the Week.<br /> <br /> Savannah State senior Alisha Nelson had an honorable mention in the week&rsquo;s awards after setting a new school record in the high jump with a leap of 1.70m at the Shamrock Invitational.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br />
