Longwood Downs Lady Tigers

FARMVILLE, Va.- Longwood went the final eight minutes without a field goal but hung on to defeat Savannah State 47-37 in Willett Hall.

Both teams struggled from the field as Longwood shot 25 percent and SSU shot 22.6 percent.

In the first half, the score was tied at seven put the Lancers went on a 16-3 run to go ahead 23-10 with 45 seconds left in the half.

SSU finished the period with free throws by Ezinne Kalu and Britany Cade and a jumper by Jasmine Kirkland and were down 23-14 at the half.

The Lady Tigers trailed by 13 early in the second half but strung together a 12-5 run to get within six with 10:45 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Morgan Smith put Longwood ahead 38-28 with 8:05 on the clock.

The Lancers would not get another field goal but would end the game making 9 of 12 free throws and holding on for the victory.

Savannah State won get within two points with 5:24 left and again at the two minute mark as Jasmine Kirkland's layup made the score 42-36.

Kirkland came off the bench to lead Savannah State (14-11) with 10 points. Courtney Long grabbed seven rebounds.

Longwood, who lost to SSU 60-34 on Feb. 13, out-rebounded the Lady Tigers 49-39.

The Lancers (7-20) were led by Smith's 13 points.
