Late Run Lifts Morris Past Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State women's basketball team ended their season with a 55-50 loss to Morris College in Tiger Arena, before a crowd of 643 fans.

The game was tied at 47 with 4:21 remaining and the Hornets held SSU without a field goal until Mattisha Mangum hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left.

The Lady Tigers end their season with a 9-21 record while Morris improved to 15-14.

Morris opened the game with a 5-0 run and led 19-12 with just under seven minutes left before SSU ended the half with a 13-7 run.

The Hornets led 26-25 at the half.

The teams traded baskets to open up the second period but Morris used a 12-4 run to pull ahead 40-33 with 13 minutes left.

SSU fought back and took a 43-42 with 8:24 remaining when Reynetta Phillips made a layup.

Phillips' layup with 5:14 on the clock gave SSU a 47-45 lead but Morris scored 10 unanswered points to seal the win.

Courtney Long led Savannah State with 14 points while Mangum chipped in 10. Alisha Nelson had eight rebounds and eight blocks.

SSU shot 41.5 percent from the floor but was 4-for-10 from the free throw line.

Morris received 14 points from Jennifer Quinn.

Savannah natives Shaniqua Campbell (13 points and eight rebounds) and Jamecia Ready (four points) helped Morris pull the upset.

Morris shot 32.7 percent from the floor and the Hornets out-rebounded SSU 41 to 36.
