BLACKSBURG, Va.- Savannah State led Virginia Tech at halftime but ran out of gas in the second half as the Hokies won 68-41 in Cassell Coliseum.
The Lady Tigers shocked the crowd of 2,028 by taking a 23-21 lead into intermission.
Virginia Tech jumped out to a 16-5 lead with 9:31 remaining but SSU answered by finishing the half with a 18-5 run.
Nikki Davis' jumper with 12:29 left was Tech's last field goal of the opening half.
The Hokies shot 18.8 percent from the field in the first half and missed all three 3-point attempts.
Tech regained the lead early in the second period and never trailed again.
SSU (9-18) trailed 31-29 with 16:24 on the clock but Tech went ahead by 13 with a 16-5 run.
Two free throws by
Ashlee Barley cut SSU's deficit to 11 but Tech scored 15 unanswered points during a 19-3 spurt to grab a 66-39 lead with less than a minute remaining. The Lady Tigers went over six minutes without a field goal in the second half.
SSU shot 17.4 percent from the floor in the second half while Tech hit 21 of 30 field goal attempts (70 %).
Savannah State made 13 of 14 free throw attempts but made 24 turnovers.
Tech (13-11) won the rebounding battle 44 to 31.
Mattisha Mangum had 10 points for the Lady Tigers.
Alisha Nelson added five rebounds and five blocks.
Shanel Harrison scored 18 points for Virginia Tech.
