MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Savannah State went over seven minutes without a field goal but held on to defeat Alabama State 50-49 in the ASU Acadome.
Crissa Jackson's jumper with 7:02 remaining gave SSU a 41-37 lead. Savannah State would not hit another field goal the rest of the game but the Lady Tigers closed the game hitting nine of 13 free throw attempts to earn the victory.
The win extends SSU's winning streak to four games and improves their overall record to 6-2.
With the score tied at 45,
Courtney Long made three of four free throw attempts while Jackson was two for two.
SSU led 50-47 with nine seconds remaining. ASU's Jakalya Hill missed a 3-pointer and Tanika Jackson grabbed the rebound and made a layup at the buzzer for the final points of the game.
Long scored eight of her game-high 14 points from the free throw line for SSU.
Alisha Nelson added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Alabama State jumped out to a 5-0 lead and extended it to 14-4 with 12:35 on the clock.
Trailing 18-8, Savannah State put together a 14-3 run to go ahead by one with 2:24 remaining.
ASU went ahead by three but a pair of free throws by Nelson sent Savannah State into the half trailing 27-26.
With the game tied at 33, Briana Thomas hit a jumper for ASU with 10:09 left. A Nelson free throw made it a one point game and a jumper by Long gave SSU a 36-35 lead with 9:21 left. Savannah State never trailed again.
Hill had 10 points for the Hornets (1-4).
