SAVANNAH, Ga.- Simone Durden made a layup with seven seconds left to break a 38-38 tie and Deidra Jones hit a free throw with two seconds remaining to lift Florida A&M (2-0) to a 41-38 win over Savannah State at Tiger Arena.
The crowd of 966 saw SSU's record fall to 2-2 as the contest had 14 lead changes and six ties.
A 3-pointer by Jones gave the Rattlers their largest lead of the night at 33-28 with 7:55 remaining but Savannah State battle back with a 10-3 spurt to go ahead by two (38-36) with 1:05 left after
Raven James hit a free throw.
With 44 seconds on the clock, Jones , who had a game-high 16 points, made a pair of free throws to tie the game.
SSU had a chance to take the lead again but James, who ended the evening with five points and six rebounds before fouling out, missed two free throws.
Tameka McKelton missed a 3-pointer for FAMU but Durden grabbed the offensive rebound and laid it back up for the go ahead basket.
After Jones' free throw, SSU had a chance to tie the game but
Crissa Jackson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Darice Fountaine came off the bench to lead SSU with 12 points while Jackson scored 11. James and
Alisha Nelson combined for nine points and 13 rebounds.
The first period was nip and tuck just like the second half.
With the game tied at 13, the Rattlers received a layup from Antonia Bennett and a jumper from McKelton to take a four-point advantage with 7:45 left.
Fountaine hit a jumper but FAMU's Quiana Donald, who had 11 rebounds, stole the ball from
Ashlee Barley and Gaines made a layup for a 19-15 Rattler lead with 5:47 remaining.
FAMU did not score again and Savannah State was held to just one field goal, a layup by Fountiane with 1:01 left.
SSU trailed 19-17 at intermission.
Florida A&M shot 25.9 percent from the floor for the game and out-rebounded SSU 40 to 32.
Savannah State was a cold 41.2 percent from the free throw line and made 25 turnovers.
