TUNICA RESORTS, Ms.- After two rounds of play, Savannah State and Central State were in a battle for fifth place but CSU pulled away on Wednesday in the SIAC Golf Championships which were held at Tunica National Golf and Tennis.
SSU trailed the Marauders by two strokes after the first round and were down by only one stroke heading into the third round. But Savannah State carded a 342 on the final day of play while Central State shot 324.
Savannah State placed sixth in the championships with a score of 991 (328-321-342) while Central State was fifth with their score of 972.
Individually,
Justin Woods paced the Tigers, finishing tied for 15 with a three-round score of 234 (78-77-79). Woods made a pair of birdies in the first round on the fifth and 16th holes while in the second round he sank birdies on the third, seventh and the 10th holes. The freshman from San Diego, California made birdies on the seventh and ninth holes in the third round.
Woods finished one stroke behind the 14th place finisher, three strokes behind the 12th place finisher and was five strokes from making the top ten.
Hayden Plybon was six strokes behind Woods to finish 22nd with his score of 240 (78-75-87).
Plybon made birdies on the third, tenth and 14th holes in the opening round, on the third, 10th and 14th holes in the second round and on the seventh hole in the final round.
Brooks Garland carded a 249 987-80-82) to finish 28th.
The Suwanee, Georgia native hit a birdie on the fifth hole in the first round and made one on the third hole in the second round. On the final day of play, Garland made birdies on the seventh and 14th holes.
Rounding out the SSU golfers was
Lavelle Teague, Jr. who was 36th after shooting 268 (85-89-94).
Teague made a birdie on the 15th hole in the first round while making back-to-back birdies in the third round on the third and fourth holes. The San Diego freshman didn't make any birdies in the second round but he made par five times (3, 4, 6, 7, 10).
Miles was the team winner while Albert Laursen of LeMoyne-Owen was the low medalist.
