SAVANNAH, GA-The last week of the first month of the new year sees another jammed packed week of action for our athletics programs. The men's & women's basketball teams begin a long road trip up north for two key conference games, the indoor track & field squad finally gets their season going, and the baseball squad officially opens their 2026 season. We will give all of the details on how you can catch all of these squads in action in our latest installment of "This Week In Tiger Athletics".

Women's Basketball
The Savannah State women's basketball squad finally saw their seven game losing skid come to an end last week in their home victory over LeMoyne-Owen. The Lady Tigers will turn their attentions north as they get set to battle two SIAC West Division squads. SSU starts the road trip in Wilberforce, Ohio on Thursday as they will face the Lady Marauders of Central State with tip-off set for 5:30pm from Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium. The road trip next takes the ladies to the capital city of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Frankfort for a matchup against Kentucky State on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm CST/1:00pm EST from the William Exum Center. Both contests will be aired live on the SIAC Network.

Men's Basketball
Head Coach Clevan Thompson and the Savannah State men's basketball squad have put themselves in the hunt in a tightly contested SIAC East Division. As it sits now, the Orange & Blue are in third place in the division, two games behind second place Clark Atlanta, and three behind division leading Morehouse. The Tigers begin a tough road trip this week with two games against West Division foes. Savannah State will face Central State this coming Thursday at 7:30pm, then will head to Kentucky State for a battle at 3:00pm CST/2:00pm EST on Saturday. Both contests will be aired live on the SIAC Network.

Indoor Track & Field
Head Coach Ted Whitaker and the SSU men's & women's track & field squads will at long last open the indoor portion of their 2026 this weekend. The Tigers and Lady Tigers will head to Mill Spring, North Carolina take part in the Tryon Banked Collegiate Invitational track meet. The one day event will take place on Friday, January 30th at the Tryon International Center.

Baseball
Year #2 of the Florentino Burgos era of Savannah State baseball begins in earnest this week. The Tigers are hoping that this season is finally the year that they breakthrough to an SIAC Championship, after reaching the Tournament Championship game in each of the last three seasons. The Tigers will open the 2026 campaign in South Florida this weekend, where they will have a three-game series against the Eagles of the University of Fort Lauderdale. The series will start on Saturday, January 31st with a doubleheader starting at 12:00pm and will wrap up with a single contest on Friday, February 1st at 1:00pm. All three contests are scheduled to be live streamed on UFTL's YouTube Channel.
