This Week In Tiger Athletics (Week of Sept. 28th-Oct. 5th)

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State Athletics turns the calendar to October with three Tiger programs in action this week. Men's golf returns to the course for its second tournament of the fall, volleyball heads north for the second SIAC Crossover of the season, and Savannah State football closes out a two-game homestand Saturday evening at Theodore A. "Ted" Wright Stadium.

Here's what's ahead in this week's edition of "This Week In Tiger Athletics."

Men's Golf
Savannah State men's golf returns to tournament action Monday and Tuesday when the Tigers travel to South Carolina to compete in the Newberry College Wolves Fall Intercollegiate.

Head Coach Kelly Allen and the Tigers opened the fall portion of their 2026-27 schedule last week at the Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. HBCU Golf Classic at Bear's Best Atlanta in Suwanee, Georgia.

Lavelle Teague, Jr. led Savannah State in the season-opening event, firing a six-over-par 78 to finish tied for 17th overall. Quentin Brooks followed with a 79, while Justin Woods carded an 81. Freshman Gauge Tailor-Simmons shot an 88 in his collegiate debut and Nicholas Flowers rounded out the Savannah State lineup.

The Tigers finished seventh in the eight-team Division II field with a team score of 326.

Savannah State will now look to build on its opening performance with two days of competition in Lancaster, South Carolina.

Volleyball
Savannah State volleyball continues its extended road stretch this weekend when the Lady Tigers travel to Wilberforce, Ohio, for the second SIAC Crossover of the season, this one hosted by Central State University..

Head Coach Roselidah Obunaga and the Lady Tigers will play three conference matches over two days inside Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium.

Savannah State opens the weekend Friday afternoon against Lane College at 2:00 p.m. before returning to the court later that evening to face LeMoyne-Owen College at 7:00 p.m.

The Lady Tigers will close the weekend Saturday morning against Tuskegee University at 10:30 a.m.

The trip marks Savannah State's second SIAC Crossover of the season after the Lady Tigers played Kentucky State, Central State, Spring Hill and Miles earlier this month in Albany, Georgia.

Following this weekend's crossover, Savannah State will play at Benedict on October 8 before finally returning to Tiger Arena on October 9 against Allen.

Football
Savannah State football remains at home this weekend as the Tigers welcome Allen University to "The Marsh" Saturday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Theodore A. "Ted" Wright Stadium.

Saturday's matchup will conclude a two-game homestand for Head Coach Thomas Howard and the Tigers and will mark Savannah State's fourth consecutive contest against a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent.

The Tigers and Yellow Jackets met last season in Columbia, South Carolina, with Savannah State earning a road victory.

Saturday's contest has been designated as Military Appreciation/Cancer Awareness Day and will be presented by Savannah State University's College of Science & Humanities and Hyundai College of Education.

Following Saturday's game, Savannah State will hit the road for consecutive SIAC contests against Morehouse College on October 10 and Kentucky State on October 24, with the Tigers' Homecoming matchup against Fort Valley State scheduled between those road trips on October 17.
