This Week In Tiger Athletics (Week of Oct. 5th-Oct. 10th)

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State Athletics continues a busy October with four programs in action this week. Women's golf opens its 2026-27 season in South Carolina, volleyball continues SIAC play, men's and women's cross country return to competition and football travels to Atlanta for another SIAC matchup. Here's what's ahead in this week's edition of "This Week In Tiger Athletics."

WOMEN'S GOLF
Savannah State women's golf officially opens its 2026-27 season this week as the Lady Tigers travel to Landrum, South Carolina to compete in the Glassy 2026 College Invite, hosted by North Greenville University.

The three-day tournament begins Sunday, October 4 and continues through Tuesday, October 6. Monday and Tuesday's rounds will open this week's slate of competition for Savannah State Athletics.

The event is the first of three fall tournaments currently scheduled for the Lady Tigers. Following the Glassy 2026 College Invite, Savannah State will return to competition October 18-20 at the Barton Fall Intercollegiate in Wilson,

North Carolina, before closing the fall at the Flagler Fall Slam, October 25-27, in St. Augustine, Florida.

VOLLEYBALL
Savannah State volleyball returns to SIAC action this week with a pair of matches beginning Thursday evening on the road.

Head Coach Roselidah Obunaga and the Lady Tigers travel to Columbia, South Carolina, to face Benedict College inside HRC Arena. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Savannah State then makes the quick turnaround and returns home Friday evening to welcome Allen University to Tiger Arena. The match will also serve as Military Appreciation Night.

Friday's contest will mark the first home appearance for the Lady Tigers since their Sept. 12 victory over Brewton-Parker Christian University.

Following the two-match week, Savannah State remains home to face Albany State on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

CROSS COUNTRY
Savannah State men's and women's cross country teams return to competition Saturday morning when the Tigers and Lady Tigers travel to Bluffton, South Carolina, for the Sand Shark Invitational.

The meet will be Savannah State's third competition of the 2026 season following appearances at the Willie Laster Invitational in Albany and the Brewton-Parker Invitational in Mount Vernon.

On the men's side, Jaden-Wayne McPherson, Braylin Grier and Gabriel Hinkins have helped lead the Tigers through the opening portion of the schedule.

Saturday will also serve as Savannah State's final scheduled meet before the 2026 SIAC Cross Country Championships, which will be held Nov. 6 at the Georgia Premier Cross Country Course in Macon, Georgia.

FOOTBALL
Savannah State football heads back on the road Saturday as the Tigers travel to Atlanta for an SIAC matchup against Morehouse College.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at B.T. Harvey Stadium.

Saturday's game will have an added connection for first-year Savannah State Head Coach Thomas Howard, who returns to his alma mater. Howard played collegiately at Morehouse before beginning his coaching career.

The matchup will be Savannah State's fifth consecutive game against an SIAC opponent and its first road contest since traveling to Edward Waters on Sept. 19.

Following Saturday's trip to Atlanta, the Tigers return to Theodore A. "Ted" Wright Stadium for one of the biggest weekends of the season when Savannah State hosts rival Fort Valley State for Homecoming 2026 on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
