Tigers Wrap Up Opening Round Of HBCU Invitational

SUWANEE, Ga.- Savannah State has wrapped up play on Monday afternoon in the opening round of the 40th Thomas W. Dortch Jr. Collegiate Invitational that is sponsored by the Black College Golf Coaches Association. The tournament is being played at Laurel Spring Golf Club in Suwanee.

SSU, who is competing in the Division II category with an all freshmen squad, saw Quentin Brooks and Lavelle Teague, Jr. both shoot 79 in the first round but the remaining Savannah State players were not far behind with Brooks Garland shooting 80, Justin Woods shooting 81 and Nathaniel Spencer carding a 82.

Brooks shot for par eight times on the first nine holes and did it five times on the back nine while Teague shot for par 11 times. The San Diego, California native shot for par on holes 5-8 and again on holes 12-15.

Garland made a birdie on the seventh hole and shot for par five times on the front nine. Woods made three birdies on the first day on holes 2, 9 and 14 and finished the day making par nine times while Spencer shot for par six times on the final nine holes and had eight on the day.

Savannah State has a team score of 319 and sits in fourth place behind Miles (292), Morehouse (303) and Livingstone (314). Johnson C. Smith is behind SSU with a score of 321 and Fisk, who is competing with four players is in sixth with a score of 287.
