Phillips And Dodson Win Abbie DeLoach Foundation Scholarships

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Two Savannah State University student-athletes were among the 27 recipients of scholarships awarded by the Abbie DeLoach Foundation at this year's ceremony and luncheon on Friday at the Savannah Golf Club.

Receiving scholarships from SSU this year were Ameer Phillips and Angela Dodson.

Phillips, a Savannah native, is a junior electronic engineering technology major on the football team while Dodson, is a junior on the women's golf team from Shaker Heights, Ohio.

The luncheon is held each year to honor academic excellence, exemplary service work or athletic commitment as well as nursing students from Georgia Southern University.

Recipients are nominated by coaches and athletic directors.

Fernando Velasco, an offensive lineman with the Atlanta Falcons, was the guest speaker this year.
The Abbie DeLoach Foundation was founded in 2016 by her family after the athlete and nursing student lost her life in a tragic car accident. Each year, the Foundation rewards student-athletes from Georgia Southern and Savannah State with scholarships to recognize their time commitment to their studies and to sports.
