Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C.- Savannah State saw their four game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday evening, following a 75-59 loss to Allen, in a game played at John Hurst Adams Gymnasium.
SSU freshman
Jayden Boykin produced the best game of her young collegiate career against the Yellow Jackets, finishing with 17 points, six rebounds, five steals and one assist. The Franklin, Georgia native made six of eight free throw attempts.
Savannah State opened the game with the first five points with Boykin making two free throws and
Kayla Grant adding a layup and a free throw but Allen answered with a 11-2 spurt to take the lead.
Two more free throws by Boykin got SSU within two but Allen made a layup with four seconds left in the quarter to make the score 13-9.
With Allen (12-6, 8-4 SIAC) holding a 17-12 advantage, the Yellow Jackets used a 10-1 run to expand Savannah State's deficit to 14 with 3:17 left in the second quarter.
The Lady Tigers were able to get within ten but trailed 31-19 at the half.
Savannah State was down 39-21 with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter and trailed by 14 two minutes later but strung together a 12-3 rally to slice their deficit to 47-42 at the 1:26 mark of the third quarter thanks to a three-pointer and a free throw by
Mya Byrd, two free throws by Grant, two layups by
Jaliyah Harper and a jumper by
Myasia Jones.
The Lady Tigers outscored Allen 23-19 in the third quarter as they shot 54.1 percent from the field, made two 3-pointers and connected on five of eight free throw attempts.
With 6:42 left in the fourth quarter, SSU had whittled Allen's lead to 56-52 but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 15-3 run to go ahead 71-55 with 2:17 remaining.
Jones had 14 points and five rebounds for Savannah State and Harper chipped in ten points, three rebounds and two steals.
To round out the Lady Tiger scoring, Byrd had six points, five rebounds and two assists,
Jazmin Thornton had five points and seven rebounds, Grant had five points and six rebounds while
Sanai Chisholm scored two points.
Savannah State (10-9, 6-7 SIAC) will return to Tiger Arena on February 8 to face Benedict at 2 p.m for Homecoming 2.0.
