Savannah State's Volleyball Season Opener Canceled

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The 2023 Savannah State University women's volleyball team's season opener has been canceled.
 
The Lady Tigers were scheduled to play their first game of the season on the road on September 1 against Middle Georgia State University, a NAIA school, but the game has been canceled and will not be made up.
 
Savannah State's season opener will now be at home against Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Albany State University on September 6 at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
 
SSU's annual Orange and Blue Scrimmage has been pushed back to September 5 at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena. The scrimmage is free and open to the public.
 
Head Volleyball Coach Roselidah Obunaga will be entering her fourth full year as head coach after serving as interim in 2019. Under her leadership, the program has improved greatly with three consecutive SIAC Championship appearances. Last season, the team posted a 12-12 overall record and a 12-7 mark in conference play. Both were program records.
 
The 2023 team will be led by a trio of SSU players who earned preseason all conference honors.

Destinee Langston earned SIAC First Team preseason honors while sophomore middle hitter Allena Norton and junior libero Kloe Ludy earned Second Team honors.

Langston who earned All-SIAC First Team honors last season, returns as outside hitter. The Fayetteville, Georgia native had 256 kills, 24 serving aces, 217 digs and 13 blocks a year ago.
 
Norton had 218 kills and 47 blocks last year while Ludy chipped in 49 assists, 338 digs and 14 serving aces.
 
The 2023 campaign features 24 games with ten marked as home games during the regular season.
 
The Lady Tigers will travel to Augusta, Georgia on Sept. 9 to participate in a tri-match with Carolina University and Paine College.
 
Savannah State travels to Benedict College on Sept. 11 for another SIAC match before returning to Tiger Arena for a two-game home stand against Paine (Sept. 13) and SIAC rival Fort Valley State University (Sept. 15).
 
A trip to Albany State on Sept. 18 looms on the calendar and afterwards the team will participate in the SIAC Crossover in Cartersville, Georgia on Sept. 21-23. During the Crossover, the Lady Tigers will face Lane College, Central State University, Kentucky State University, Spring Hill College and LeMoyne-Owen College.
 
SSU returns home for a non-conference match with Middle Georgia State before hitting the road for another SIAC Crossover hosted by Spring Hill in Mobile, Alabama on Sept. 30 where they will face Tuskegee University and Miles College.
 
Home contests to start the month of October will be Talladega (Oct. 2) College and Benedict (Oct. 6) before they start a four-game road trip at Allen University (Oct. 9), Clark Atlanta University (Oct. 13), Edward Waters University (Oct. 16) and Fort Valley State (Oct. 24).
 
The Lady Tigers will close the regular season with home contests with Clark Atlanta (Oct. 30), Edward Waters (Oct. 30) and Allen (November 1).
 
The 2023 SIAC Volleyball Championships will be held Nov. 10-12 at a yet to be determined site.
