Lady Tigers Push Past Edward Waters To Win Sixth Straight

SAVANNAH, Ga.- When a construction worker goes to a job, he comes prepared with his hardhat, work boots and lunch bucket.

Savannah State had that same type work ethic on Friday night as they grinned out a 3-2 win over Edward Waters in Tiger Arena to extend their winning streak to six.

The Lady Tigers opened the match with a 25-22 win in the first set but Edward Waters answered with a 25-17 victory in the next set to knot the match at 1-1.

Savannah State rallied to a 25-19 win in the third set before the visitors from Jacksonville, Florida won the fourth set 25-11.

In the fifth and deciding set, SSU held on to a 15-11 win, thanks to three blocks by Mina Ezikpe and four kills by Nyalah Smith along with half a dozen service errors by Edward Waters.

The win improves Savannah State to 13-4 overall and 9-2 in the SIAC.

In the first set, Smith had four of SSU's ten kills and Edward Waters committed ten attack errors and four service errors. With the score tied at 22, an error by Edward Waters along with kills by Mya McCall and Smith were the final three points that Savannah State needed.

Savannah State made 11 attack errors in the second set and had no blocks but Savannah Everett had five of the team's 11 kills. Edward Waters led by one but used a 8-0 run to pull away.

SSU exploded for 16 kills in the third set with Everett and Iyonna Pike making four apiece and Smith having three.

The Lady Tigers had a -.030 hitting percentage in the fourth set and had only seven kills while making eight attack errors and no blocks. Everett and Smith had two kills apiece. EWU jumped out to a 9-2 advantage and didn't look back.

In the fifth set, SSU had a .318 hitting percentage as a team. Down 6-4, Savannah State used a 9-3 spurt to take the lead for good.

Five SSU players had at least 11 digs with Saniaa Dickey getting 19, Everett and Amiyah Walker having 15 each, Kira Raby having 12 and McCall finishing with 11.

Ezikpe and Saunders had five blocks each while Smith chipped in four. Walker had a season-high 44 assists while Saunders and Everett had two aces each.

Everett ended the match with 16 kills and Smith added 13.

Savannah State will travel to Albany State on October 21for a key conference match.
