Three Lady Tigers To Play In HBCU All-Star Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga.– Former Savannah State women's basketball stars Mia Goolsby, Ta'Kyla Austin, and Bria Gibbs have been invited to play in the inaugural HBCU All-Star Dream Classic in Harlem, N.Y.

The event is set for Saturday, August 5, 2023 on the historic court of Rucker Park. [Tickets can be found here]

Both the men's and women's games will feature recent HBCU players who are now eligible for professional league opportunities. Scouts and coaches from professional teams will be on hand for the event.

The HBCU All-Star Dream Classic will bring 40 of the best basketball players to Harlem, representing the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA), Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and independent conferences.

Goolsby will play on Team Sojo's Truth, coached by Vanessa Watson. She will face-off against former teammates, Gibbs and Austin, who will play for Team Athlea's Aces, coached by Barvenia Wooten.

Savannah State is the only school in the HBCU Dream Classic to feature three former players.

Gibbs finished her final year at SSU at the top of the stats for the Lady Tigers. The center was the top rebounder with 176 boards, averaging 7.3 a game. She was the second best shooter on the team as well, maintaining a .498 clip from the field with 320 made field goals.

Gibbs also scored her 1,000th career point in her final season, making her one of only a few Savannah State basketball players to reach the milestone.

"I am so grateful to have been selected to play in the HBCU All-Star Classic," Gibbs said. "This is a wonderful opportunity to get my name out there in the professional world. It's even better that I will have my teammates by my side."

Austin finished her eligibility in the 2021-2022 season. She finished her education last year, earning a Masters of Business Administration while serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Savannah State men's basketball team.
Austin closed her final season of collegiate action as a top scorer for the historic 2021-2022 team. She shot .427 from the field and .396 from beyond the arc.

"I'm honored to be able to represent Savannah State at the All-Star Classic," Austin said. "I've always wanted to play professional basketball. Playing in the All-Star game will give me the exposure I need to achieve that goal."

Goolsby closed her senior season at point guard with a .379 field goal percentage. She led the team in assists in her junior season.

"This will give me an opportunity to play amongst other great athletes from HBCU schools and that's big to me," Goolsby said. "It will be cool to see everybody showcasing their talents. I always play against TK and Bria when we scrimmage, so it won't be anything new! I know they are going to bring a lot to the table."

All three were part of the historic 2021-2022 team who finished 27-3, tying the school record with the 1977-78 team for the most wins in a single season.

They started that season 14-0, setting a new school record for most consecutive wins to open a season. That team finished the season with an incredible 14-1 SIAC record.

The 2021-2022 Lady Tigers reached as high as No. 12 in the WBCA Coaches Poll, No. 24 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, and No. 6 in the NCAA South Region Poll—all were program bests.

After finishing runner-up in the SIAC Championship, they became only the second team in program history to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
