Golf's Angela Dodson Awarded Sifford Scholarship

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Savannah State golfer Angela Dodson was announced as a recipient of the inaugural Sifford Scholarship, awarded by The Sifford Scholarship Fund, earlier this month.

The Sifford Scholarship Fund was established in 2022 in honor of the legendary Dr. Charles "Charlie" L. Sifford, the first Black golfer to earn a PGA tour card. The Cobbs Creek Foundation in Philadelphia serves as the fiscal sponsor for the scholarship fund.

"I am honored to have been selected for the Sifford HBCU Scholarship," Dodson said. "Sifford was a staple in the golf community. By being selected, I am proud to bring attention to not only Savannah State University but the women's golf program as well. I am very grateful."

The Sifford Scholarship was created to help fund college costs for students who attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and minority students focusing their education on a golf management program, according to a press release.

Dodson just finished her first season at Savannah State as a member of the women's golf team. Students from North Carolina Central, Morgan State, Florida A&M, Howard and Morehouse were also awarded scholarships from the fund.

"The inaugural class of Sifford Scholars is nothing short of amazing," the Sifford family remarked in a press release. "The Sifford family is so proud of the seven scholars chosen. These young scholars selected exemplify the academic and personal excellence on the path to a successful career. Dr. Sifford would be extremely proud of the young men and women chose to receive a scholarship in his honor."
