Track Tigers Compete In Two Meets; Set Records And Win Events

MARIETTA, Ga.– The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed in back-to-back meets this past weekend, setting new personal bests and winning several events.
 
On April 14, Savannah State competed in the Running Eagles Open, hosted by Life University in Marietta, Georgia. The next day, the Tigers traveled to Mount Berry, Georgia for the Berry Field Day Invitational hosted by Berry College.
 
At the Running Eagles Open, Kayla Chance led the Lady Tigers with some stellar performances in the long distance events. She won the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:58.39 and set a new personal best in the 800m, finishing second with a 2:19.97.
 
Ravyn Cystrunk finished fourth in the 400m with a time of 57.61. In the 100m hurdles, Ky'Leigha Robinson finished just behind her teammate in seventh place with a new personal best time of 15.77. Jeainna Bryant finished sixth in the event, running a 15.39.
 
The relay team of Bryant, Cystrunk, Sadrea Mabry and Delilyah Pelham finished third in the 4x100 with a time of 47.85.
 
In the field events, Mabry earned a second place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 11.42m. A'Mijya Dudley set a new personal best in the same event with a distance of 9.87m.
 
Kennedy Spears finished third in the high jump, recording a 1.57m effort. Da'Aliyah Johnson finished third in the long jump with a distance of 5.42m.
 
For the Tigers, Winfred Porter led SSU in the 100m dash with a time of 10.65 and a fourth place finish. Yastremski Johnson and Ti'an Rice each set new personal bests in the same event with times of 10.99 and 11.89, respectively.
 
Two Tigers set new personal best records in the 5000m run. Senior Erik Roberts ran a 17:432.66 for a 10th place finish followed by Myles Corey who ran an 18:13.89.
 
Alex Loyd set a new personal best in the 400m run, finishing with a time of 51.30. Teammate Dominique Bailey finished just before him in eighth place with a 50.90.
 
In the hurdles events, Nyzaveon Thompson snagged two second place finishes. In the 110m hurdles, he ran a 15.28 and in the 400m hurdles he recorded a 55.62.
 
The team of Bailey, Rice, Antonio Russell and Loyd finished fourth in the 4x100 relay with a time of 43.22.
 
Tony Rountree—who doubles as a defensive tackle on the SSU football team—led the Tigers in the field events. He snagged a second place finish in the shot put with a personal best effort of 13.31m.
 
Bailey finished third in the long jump with a 6.60m effort. Rice and Daunte Douglas both set new personal bests in the same event with 6.16m and 6.11m efforts, respectively.
 
Cameron Edwards finished third in the triple jump with a 13.96 followed by Solomon Mitchell who recorded a college best 13.46m effort for a fourth place finish.
 
The Lady Tigers again shined the next day at the Berry Field Day Invite. Jeainna Bryant won the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.30. Chance won the 3000 Steeplechase with a set a new personal best time of 12:17.46.
 
In the field, Kennedy Spears and Johnson had excellent performances. Spears won the high jump with a 1.62m effort, a new personal best. Dudley followed her with a fourth place finish and college best 1.52m effort.
 
Johnson won the long jump event with a new personal best 5.53m effort. Mabry finished second in the event with a 5.26m jump. KyLeigha Robinson set a new college best record in the same event with a 4.90m jump.
 
For the men, Porter had another strong outing, finishing third in the 100m dash with a time of 10.55. Russell followed him with a new college best time of 11.15.
 
Roberts and Corey had strong outings in the 3000 Steeplechase. Roberts set a new personal best time of 11:23.46, finishing sixth. Corey was milliseconds him in seventh with a new personal best time of 11:23.53.
 
Aidan Holliman had a good day in the field, leading SSU in the high jump event with a second place finish and a 1.95m effort. Holliman holds the school record of 2.00m in the event. Bailey was just behind him with a 1.90m effort, a personal best record for him.
 
Bailey set another personal best in the long jump, finishing in second place with a 6.82m effort. Russell was just behind him with a 6.51m effort, also a new personal best.
 
The Savannah State track teams will compete in one more regular season event, the University of South Carolina Open this coming weekend, before heading to the 2023 Cricket SIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship, April 27-April 29.
