Tigers Finish Eighth At SC State

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Longtime Savannah State head track & field coach Ted Whitaker returned to his old stomping grounds on Saturday to lead Savannah State at the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Classic on the campus of South Carolina State.

The meet was a homecoming for Whitaker who earned his bachelor's degree in physical education at what was then known as South Carolina State College in 1965.

Meontavious McLeod finished second in the 100m race with a time of 10.79 to lead the Tigers.

Cameron Frails was third in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 13:26.42 while Evan Guyton claimed third in the discus with a toss of 42.18m.

Nyzaveon Thompson was fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.28.

Kajuan Davis was sixth in the 110m hurdles with a run of 15.25 while Raymond McKoy was sixth in the high jump with a jump of 1.90m and Xavier Wilson was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.75m.

The 4x100m relay team (Shaun Eason, McLeod, Davis, Yastremski Johnson) finished seventh in their race after being clocked at 42.49.

In other events, Kaden Christy was 14th in the 200m with a run of 22.88 while Dominique Bailey was 22nd in the 400m (53.51), 11th in the pole vault (3.00m), 14th in the javelin (32.79m), 19th in the shot put (9.40m) and 26th in the discus (31.63m).

In the 400m hurdles, Frails was 15th with a run of 59.33 while Nehemiah Shanks was 16th with a run of 59.35 and Eszaunie Earls was 18th with a time of 1:01.50.

The 4x400m relay team of Jadon Rountree, Thompson, Frails and Shanks was 12th with a run of 3:34.94 while in the long jump Billy Johnson finished ninth with a jump of 6.49m and Wilson was 14th with a leap of 6.35m.

Matthew McWilliams finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 12.66m and 12th in the javelin with a toss of 33.58m.

Donovan Holdip was 10th in the hammer throw with a toss of 37.15m.

Savannah State finished the meet with 40 points which was good enough for eighth place among the 13 teams.

Voorhees won first place with 106 points followed by Bethune-Cookman (100) and The Citadel (99) to round out the top three.
