ALBANY, Ga.- Savannah State won two events at the Alice Coachman Invitational on Saturday at the Hampton Smith Fields at the Robert Cross Track & Field Complex.
In their first participating in the meet since 2022, SSU claimed first in the shot put and 4x100m relay race.
Tony Rountree won the shot put with a throw of 14.23m while the 4x100m relay team (
Tyler Phillips, Meontavious McLeon,
Kajuan Davis,
Shaun Eason) won their race with a time of 40.71.
Earning second place finishes were
Evan Guyton, McLeon and
Xavier Wilson. Guyton had a toss of 45.10 in the discus, McLeon had a time of 10.52 in the 100m and Wilson had a leap of 14.05m in the triple jump.
Finishing third were
Billy Johnson (6.69m) in the long jump, Davis (14.78) in the 110m hurdles,
Raymond McKoy (1.91m) in the high jump and
Jadon Rountree (1:56.14) in the 800m race.
In the field events,
Donovan Holdip was fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 37.35m,
Dominique Bailey was 10th in the pole vault with a leap of 10-0 and fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.86m.
Billy Johnson was seventh in the triple jump with a jump of 13.38m while in the long jump Bailey was fourth with his jump of 6.65m and Wilson was fifth with his leap of 6.54m. Guyton claimed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 12.89m while
Matthew McWilliams was 10th with his toss of 12.20m. McWilliams finished fourth in the javelin throw with his toss of 34.65m and
Jordan Scruggs was 10th with his throw of 28.96m.
Tony Rountree finished 11th in the discus with a throw of 35.59m and Bailey came in 14th with his throw of 32.59m.
On the track, the SSU 4x100m "B" squad (
Kamari Kindle,
Ethan Hightower,
Jamari Norwood,
Kaden Christy) finished fifth after being timed at 42.00,
Cameron Frails was seventh in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 13:11.75 and
Jadon Rountree was 24th in the 1500m race with a time of 4:56.16. In the 110m hurdles,
Nyzaveon Thompson was sixth with a time of 15.33 followed by
Nehemial Shanks (15.33) who was 12th,
Eszaunie Earls (16.68) who was 13th and Bailey (18.14) who finished 16th. Thompson finished fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.10 while Shanks (59.30) was 11th, Frails (1:00.14) was 12th and Earls (1:01.59) finished 13th. In the 100m,
Yastremski Johnson (10.81) was eighth, Phillips (10.82) was ninth, Hightower (11.15) was 25th, Kindle (11.16) was 27th, Norwood (11.30) was 32nd and McKoy (11.63) finished 37th. Davis was 16th in the 200m after being timed at 22.11 while Phillips (22.16) was 19th, Christy (22.33) was 23rd,
Yastremski Johnson (22.39) was 25th, Hightower (22.54) was 28th, Hardy (23.07) finished 36th and Kindle (23.27) was 37th. In the 400m race, Christy finished 11th with a time of 48.93 and Hardy claimed 20th after his run of 53.67.
Savannah State finished fourth out of 11 teams with 106.50 points.
Albany State won the meet with 148 points followed by Columbus State (130.50), Morehouse (120), SSU and Florida A&M (58).
The meet was a homecoming for
Yastremski Johnson who went to Westover High School in Albany and
Nehemial Shanks who is from nearby Dawson, Georgia.
