GULF SHORES, Ala.— Savannah State University men's golf continued the spring season this past weekend at the 2023 Gulf Shores Invitational hosted by the Black College Golf Coaches Association (BCGCA).

The three-round tournament was played at the Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club and featured five HBCU teams—nearly all of them NCAA Division I squads. Savannah State was the only team representing NCAA Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).

Savannah State finished fourth as a team with a three-round score of 959 (323, 316, 320). Arkansas-Pine Bluff won the tournament with a team score of 903 (301, 300, 302). Prairie View A&M finished second with a 299 followed by Texas Southern (956). Maryland Eastern Shore finished fifth with a 971.

Leading the Tigers in the individual standing was Jaden Saunders, who pulled ahead of teammate Nick Macsuga in the final round to finish 11th overall.

Macsuga shot a 79 to open the tournament, then an 80 in round two. Saunders shot a 78 to open and an 81 in round to two, tying with his teammate into the final round.

Saunders pulled into the lead with a stellar third round, shooting 78 overall to finish with a 236—helped by a key birdie on 15 and three straight pars to end it.
Macsuga finished with a 79 in the third round, for a 238 in the tournament, behind two bogeys and two pars in the final four holes.

Korbin Allen finished 16th overall. He opened with an 86 in round one, but improved by nearly 10 strokes in round two, shooting a 75—the tournament low for the entire SSU team. Allen closed out with an 80 in round three for a 241.

Mark Greene shot a 248 (84, 80, 84) to finish 22nd overall followed by teammate Lucas Parisi (249).

Prairie View's Jordan Stagg won the individual medalist with a three-round 223 shooting the tournament lows in the final two rounds. Stagg opened with a 77, then carded a 74 in round two and a 72 to close out the tournament.

Savannah State will play a tune-up in early April—a duel match with North Greenville—before the 2023 Cricket SIAC Men's Golf Championship Tournament April 17-19.

They close the 2023 schedule May 8-May 10 at the annual PGA Works Collegiate Championship.
