Men's Golf Finish In Top 5 At ASU Spring Classic

Lady Tigers Finish In Sixth Place

PRATTVILLE, Ala. – Savannah State University men's golf opened the spring season this weekend at the annual Alabama State Spring Classic, hosted in Prattville, Alabama at the RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill.
 
The Tigers opened the three-round tournament tied for first place with Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Chicago State—all three teams shooting a 296 to open. The tournament was called early in the third round due to darkness. None of the teams finished the full three rounds.
 
Savannah State closed out the tournament in fourth place with a team score of 759 after shooting a 296, 308, and 155 in the shortened third round.
 
Senior Nicolas Macsuga and sophomore Jaden Saunders led the Tigers, each finishing tied for fourth place overall in the individual standings.
 
Saunders opened with a 71 in round one and shot a 78 in round two. He carded a 36 (+6) in the third round when the tournament was halted for a 186 overall. Macsuga opened with a 72 and followed that with a 75 in round two. He shot a 39 to also finish with a six-over-par 186.
 
Korbin Allen finished in the middle of the pack with a three-round 190. He shot 76 to open, 75 in round two and finished with a 40. Lucas Parisi shot a three round 195 (76, 81, 38) followed by Mark Greene (200), and Devin Smith (202).
 
Arkansas-Pine Bluff won the team race with a 742 (296, 298, 148) followed by Evansville, Alabama State, and Texas Southern. Chicago State finished sixth, followed by Miles, Alabama A&M, and Maryland Eastern Shore. Ignacio Puente from Alabama State won the individual medalist honors with a 179 (72, 71, 36).
 
Savannah State and Miles were the only two teams representing NCAA Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The remaining teams compete on the NCAA Division I level.
 
On the women's side, Savannah State finished in sixth place overall with a team score of 907. The Lady Tigers shot a 366 to open, a 367 in round two and had a 174 when the tournament was called.
 
Senior Ja'Davia McCallum led the Lady Tigers with a 16th place finish and a three-round 208. McCallum opened with an 80, shot 88 in round two and 40 in the final round.
 
Saika Charles finished in the middle of the pack with a 218 (91, 88, 39) followed by Miracle Goolsby (234), Angela Dodson (247), and Kaila Leonard (349).
 
Samford won the team tournament with a 771 (310, 312, 149), followed by Sacred Heart University, Texas Southern, Alabama State, and Bethune-Cookman. North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore finished seventh and eighth. Samford's Christian Williams won the individual title with a 186 (75, 73, 38).
 
Savannah State men's golf continue the season March 19-March 21 at the Big Blue Invitational in Bluefield, Va. The Lady Tigers will host a Spring Invite March 12-13 and the Lady Tiger Dual on April 11.
